Hope to receive instructions for teaching 2 sessions/day soon

According to statistics from Ho Chi Minh City, in the 2023-2024 school year, the rate of secondary and high school educational institutions that meet the conditions and organize 2 sessions/day is 93%. The problem is how to make this model effective for students and gain the consent of parents?

A parent from Ha Thanh, whose child is in grade 9 at Nguyen Du Secondary School in District 1, said that his child studies 2 sessions a day from Monday to Thursday, only studies in the morning on Friday, and has Saturday off. The afternoon schedule on weekdays includes subjects in the 2018 General Education Program, along with club subjects.

Parent Phuong Tran, whose child is in grade 7 at Nguyen Van Troi Secondary School in Go Vap District, said that her child studies 2 sessions/day from Monday to Friday, and has Saturday off. Every month, her child does not have to pay for the 2 sessions/day. At the same time, she said: "Before Circular 29 of the Ministry of Education and Training on regulations for extra teaching and learning, on the second session of the day, students were organized to review subjects in the 2018 General Education Program. Now, when Circular 29 comes into effect, on the second session, students are taught skills and capacity development subjects such as English with foreigners, international information technology, etc."

Ngoc Anh, whose child is in grade 11 at Gia Dinh High School in Binh Thanh District, said that her child studies 2 sessions a day from Monday to Friday, and only studies in the morning on Saturday. At Lam Son Secondary School, Binh Thanh District, 100% of students from grades 6 to 9 study 2 sessions/day, from Monday to Friday, with Saturday off. Mr. Le Dinh Thao, the school's principal, said that in compliance with Circular 29, the school has adjusted its timetable. Previously, afternoon classes were organized to strengthen review of subjects for students about to take exams, but now they are organized to teach subjects of aptitude, skills, and capacity development for students.

Teacher Nguyen Van Ngai, former Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, said that in order to implement synchronous teaching of 2 sessions/day from grade 6 to grade 12, it is necessary to ensure the conditions of school facilities, teaching staff, and teaching programs. Regarding school facilities and staff, in Ho Chi Minh City, Mr. Ngai said that in recent years, the number of schools has increased, especially the project of 4,500 classrooms is being strongly implemented.

Mr. Ngai emphasized the teaching program factor if implementing 2 sessions/day and stated that in the upcoming guidelines on teaching 2 sessions/day, it is also necessary to clarify the funding from the state or socialized education to gain public consensus. "It is necessary to clarify specific regulations from the beginning, which subjects can be taught and which subjects cannot be taught in schools to avoid extra teaching and learning "disguised" as teaching 2 sessions/day and collecting money from students," said Mr. Ngai. At the same time, according to this teacher, the Department of Education and Training and the Departments of Education and Training also need to strengthen inspection of the organization of teaching 2 sessions/day.

Faced with the current situation, the principal of a junior high school in Binh Thanh District said: "We are looking forward to receiving specific and detailed instructions from the Ministry of Education and Training and the Department of Education and Training on organizing two sessions per day in junior high and high schools. Only when we do things transparently and have a clear legal basis will parents agree and feel secure."
