Speaking on CBS News , Mr. Turner said that Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, representing Louisiana, was the one who suspended his position because “Mar-a-Lago showed concerns.”
Meanwhile, Mr. Johnson denied that this decision was made by President-elect Donald Trump, stating: "This is a decision of the House of Representatives, not an act of contempt for Mr. Turner when he is about to leave office."
Expressing "admiration for Mr. Mike Turner", saying that "he has fulfilled his duty" in running the committee overseeing the intelligence community, however, the Speaker of the House added that the committee "needs reform", "the sole purpose of this decision is to help the committee develop better, nothing else".
On the same day, the Speaker of the House announced that Mr. Turner's replacement is Arkansas representative Rick Crawford.
"Our intelligence community must maintain the highest levels of trust and oversight," Johnson said in a statement. "The House Intelligence Committee will play a key role in this work in the new Congress, and Rick Crawford, as Chairman of the Committee, will provide principled leadership."
In a separate statement, Mr Crawford pledged he would "resolutely carry out the mission of providing credible and rigorous oversight of the intelligence community's operations and funding".
Former US House Intelligence Committee Chairman Turner is a staunch supporter of NATO and Washington's support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, putting him at odds with the rising "Make America Great Again" faction in his party.
