The “giant” ancient Nghinh Xuan wild orchid, about 50 years old, 2.2m high, is an impressive natural masterpiece in Dak Lak . With its wild beauty and seductive fragrance, this orchid is not only a symbol of strong vitality but also associated with passionate stories.

The owner of the famous "giant" wild orchid tree (ancient Nghinh Xuan tree) is Mr. Nguyen Hai Hoang (37 years old, Thanh Nhat ward, Buon Ma Thuot city), a member of the city's Farmers' Association.

Wild orchid - ancient tree symbolizing spring and strong vitality

Taking a sip of fragrant tea, Mr. Hoang began to tell reporters of Dan Viet Newspaper about his long and passionate journey with wild orchids, along with the 4 years of persistent pursuit and 3 years of owning the ancient Nghinh Xuan tree.

The story began 7 years ago, when Mr. Hoang heard about a "giant" ancient Nghinh Xuan tree in Krong Na commune, Buon Don district. Although it is very famous among orchid lovers, not everyone can easily access this precious orchid.

After finding information through many relationships in the orchid growing community, Mr. Hoang decided to find Mr. Ngoc - the orchid owner, who is living in the Cau Treo Buon Don tourist area.

However, the journey to own this ancient orchid tree was not easy. According to Mr. Hoang, it took him more than 4 years to convince and become close to Mr. Ngoc. Every year, Mr. Hoang visits Mr. Ngoc's house at least 10 times, bringing a chicken and a beer crate to chat, while expressing his sincerity and passion for this ancient orchid tree.

After many conversations, by early 2022, they became close friends, and Mr. Hoang officially owned the ancient Nghinh Xuan tree that he had always dreamed of, to take care of and admire it.

According to Mr. Hoang, this ancient orchid tree is about 50 years old, with the total height of the mother tree and 5 young trees reaching about 2.2 meters. The mother tree alone is over 1.3 meters tall with 14 pairs of leaves.

Sharing the reason for his passion for this Nghinh Xuan orchid line, Mr. Hoang said that this orchid line has very special characteristics - strong stems and leaves, strong growth, and especially blooming right on the occasion of Tet Nguyen Dan, a very popular point in both the North and the South.

Because the ancient Nghinh Xuan tree was too "huge" yesterday afternoon, Mr. Hoang had to brace the tree with an iron bar to keep it from breaking.

"This orchid variety, in the North it is called Ngoc Diem, in the South it is called Tai Trau, but its official name in the past was Nghenh xuan, meaning welcoming the new spring. Later, the new common name is Nghinh xuan," said Mr. Hoang.

One of the factors that makes the Nghinh Xuan wild orchid special is the attractive fragrance of the flowers, along with the ability to bloom in order, lasting more than a month. This is a characteristic that makes this orchid species valuable and attracts many enthusiasts.

Not only owning an ancient Nghinh Xuan tree, Mr. Hoang is also a person with many years of experience in trading wild orchids. His passion for wild orchids began when he was in 8th grade, but it was not until 2016 that he officially entered the wild orchid trading profession.

Mr. Hoang once "hit it big" with mutant orchids like the 5-petal white orchid, which gave him the opportunity to contribute to social security work, while also expanding his passion for growing and trading wild orchids.

Once, while buying wild orchids by the kilogram, Mr. Hoang unexpectedly "hit the jackpot" with a mutant orchid with 5 white petals and named it after his two sons.

Talking about future plans, Mr. Hoang said he will continue to expand his orchid garden, with plans to build a new garden of more than 1,000 square meters to grow wild orchids.

"Growing wild orchids does not take too much effort or time for someone with experience like me. On average, each year, after deducting expenses, I can earn about 200 million VND from this job. Therefore, in addition to growing orchids, I also work as a truck driver to earn extra income," Mr. Hoang said with a smile.

Wild orchid enthusiast and regretful farewell to ancient Nghinh Xuan tree

Coming to see the ancient Nghinh Xuan tree, only to find out that it had been "married" to someone else, Mr. Nguyen Van Long (in Khanh Xuan ward, Buon Ma Thuot city) could not hide his regret and shared:

"I have offered to buy the tree many times, willing to pay a high price, but Mr. Hoang refused to sell. Every Lunar New Year, I come to the garden, hoping to admire the perfect beauty of the tree, but this time I am truly regretful."

Mr. Hoang revealed that after hundreds of customers coming to the garden to ask to buy, and 3 years of enjoying taking care of and admiring the tree, he "married" his ancient Nghinh Xuan tree to a relative who shares the same passion for wild orchids (in Buon Ma Thuot City) for more than 30 million VND.

Mr. Nguyen Van Long (wearing a helmet) and many other wild orchid enthusiasts regretfully watched the ancient Nghinh Xuan tree "slip out of their hands".

In particular, during the 2025 Lunar New Year season, he sold all 700 of his orchid pots, both in the garden and at the flower market stall, allowing him to return to his hometown in Quang Binh to celebrate Tet with his family after more than 10 years away.

With a long-term vision and steady steps, Mr. Hoang will continue to develop the wild orchid profession and contribute to the development of wild orchid culture in the Central Highlands. The orchid growing profession, especially the Spring orchid, will leave a deep impression and bring great success to those who are passionate and patient in pursuing it.
