A horror planet with iron wind and rain

(NLDO) - "Hellish" weather phenomena have been recorded on WASP-76b, a planet with daytime temperatures of up to 2,000 degrees Celsius.

According to Universe Today, a research team led by the University of Geneva (Switzerland) has explored the environmental conditions on WASP-76b, an extreme giant planet.

It is an "extremely hot Jupiter" located 640 light-years away in the direction of the constellation Pisces, discovered in 2013.

On this planet, a year lasts only 1.8 Earth days.

WASP-76b is tidally locked to its parent star WASP-76, much like the Moon always faces Earth with the same side.

So in this world , half of it is always daytime with an average temperature of up to 2,000 degrees Celsius, while the other half is always nighttime, "cooler" but still with extreme temperatures.

This tidal locking also creates conditions for strong winds to surround the planet.

Using the ESPRESSO spectrometer installed on the European Southern Observatory's (ESO) Very Large Telescope, the authors found that these winds contain large amounts of iron atoms, circulating continuously from the lower layers of the atmosphere to the upper layers.

The abundance of iron atoms in the atmosphere is largely due to the extremely high temperatures on the dayside of the planet, which vaporize iron.

When the wind circulates to the night surface, this iron condenses and falls as iron rain, just as water condenses and falls as rain on Earth.

Research on this intriguing planet, recently published in the scientific journal Astronomy & Astrophysics , adds another piece to the puzzle of how extrasolar planets work.

This discovery and potential upcoming discoveries on WASP-76b will help us understand a little more about the climates of the universe's most hellish planets, bombarded by extreme levels of radiation from their parent stars,
