Hanoi Class 8A2, Giang Vo Secondary School, Ba Dinh District, has three students winning first prizes in Informatics, Biology and Physics in the city's 9th grade excellent student competition.
The three students include Trinh Le Hung (Informatics), Pham Nguyen Ngan Ha (Biology) and Nguyen Tuan Minh (Physics).
Tuan Minh, one of the 10 students who won first prize in Physics in the city, said that on the day he returned from the exam, he was happy because he had done well and thought about winning a high prize. Minh's father, Nguyen Phuong Tu, said that his son has loved this subject since 6th grade, often studying by himself for two or three hours every day.
"Minh took the exam at a higher level so his family didn't set a high goal, just passed each round. Minh's first prize was beyond the family's expectations," said Mr. Tu.
Ms. Le Thi Loan, the teacher in charge of the city's excellent student competition team of Giang Vo School and Ba Dinh District, commented that all three students are intelligent and have a lot of passion for the subjects they are competing in. The learning process has many challenges because they study with their 9th grade brothers and sisters, but all three have a spirit of self-discipline, are willing to read and do extra exercises in reference books. Their families are also very close and accompany the school.
"This is a result that is completely worthy of the students' efforts and the care of their families and teachers," said Ms. Loan.
In addition to the city prize, the three students also have many other achievements. Tuan Minh won the gold medal at the 2023 World Invention and Creativity Olympiad (WICO); Le Hung won the silver medal at the International Mathematics ITMC and the national Tin HKICO gold medal; and Ngan Ha has high academic scores, with no subject below 9.

This year, Giang Vo Secondary School has 76/87 excellent student awards in the city, including 8 first prizes. In the 8th grade alone, out of 12 students who took the exam, 8 won prizes. In addition to the three students from class 8A2, the school also has Vu Mai Chi, class 8A8, who won first prize in CivicEducation . Thus, half of the first prizes of Giang Vo School belong to 8th grade students.
Ms. To Thi Hai Yen, principal of Giang Vo Secondary School, said that in order to have students compete and win awards for excellent students at higher levels, the school focuses on discovering, nurturing and orienting students from grade 6.
At that time, based on the wishes and achievements in the school report card and competitions in primary school, Giang Vo school will arrange students with relatively equal learning abilities into one class for convenient nurturing. After that, students with outstanding abilities in some aspects can join the school's subject clubs.
The contest to select excellent students in the city in cultural and scientific subjects for grade 9 in Hanoi took place at the end of January with more than 3,500 candidates. Excellent students from secondary schools were allowed to participate after passing the district-level selection round.
On March 7, the Department of Education and Training recognized 2,600 students who won prizes. Those who won first prizes will be considered for direct admission to some specialized high schools under universities such as Pedagogy and Natural Sciences; but will not receive priority in calculating admission scores to grade 10 public schools in Hanoi.
