Feeling hot, the herd of buffaloes madly charged straight into the Trinh army's ranks, goring and trampling violently, causing chaos among the enemy. Taking advantage of the opportunity, Nguyen Huu Cau (from Hai Duong ) sent out his main force to attack, causing the Trinh army to collapse.

The person mentioned is Nguyen Huu Cau.

Nguyen Huu Cau (1712-1751) was born into a poor peasant family in Thanh Ha district, Hai Duong province. As a child, he was good at literature and martial arts, and good at swimming, so people often called him Quan He (the name of a type of sea fish).

Growing up, Nguyen Huu Cau joined Nguyen Cu's uprising and was loved by him, who married his daughter to him. After Nguyen Cu was captured, Nguyen Huu Cau replaced his father-in-law as leader of the uprising army. He established a base in Do Son ( Hai Phong ). His army had tens of thousands of people, and Lord Trinh's army attacked him many times but failed.

During a battle, Nguyen Huu Cau's army was surrounded on all sides, with no way to escape. The Trinh army was sure they would capture him, so they used loudspeakers to persuade him to surrender.

In a difficult situation, Nguyen Huu Cau decided to use a fire ox formation. According to the book "Essentials of Military Strategy", he tied sharp spears to the horns and sides of each buffalo. Then, the buffalo's tail was tied with rags soaked in rosin and set on fire simultaneously.

Overheated, the herd of buffaloes madly charged straight into the Trinh army's ranks, goring and trampling violently, causing chaos among the enemy.

Taking advantage of the opportunity, Nguyen Huu Cau sent his main force to attack, causing the Trinh army to collapse. However, in 1751, Nguyen Huu Cau was defeated by the Trinh army and was captured and executed.

According to a folk legend of Do Son, the famous buffalo fighting festival in this land originated from the uprising of Nguyen Huu Cau. Legend has it that when he brought his army back, the people in the area brought three buffaloes to feast on.

When the insurgents were about to slaughter them, they suddenly charged at each other, causing a large crowd of soldiers and people to come and watch. Since then, the Do Son people often hold buffalo fighting festivals to commemorate the talented leader Nguyen Huu Cau.
