Mu Cang Chai lacks playgrounds for highland children in the summer

Báo Yên BáiBáo Yên Bái06/06/2023

YenBai - For children in urban areas, summer is a time for them to rest and relax after a year of studying with many forms of entertainment. But for children in the mountainous region of Mu Cang Chai, summer is a time to help their parents, and playgrounds for them are still far away...

Coming to Trong La village, Ho Bon commune on hot days at the end of May 2023, it is heartbreaking to see the images of black Mong boys and girls, bareheaded and barefoot, bending their backs carrying firewood, or groups of children gathering in groups to play and bathe in the rushing stream.

Seeing strangers, the children hesitated and told each other to turn away and go somewhere else. Following them for a while, asking questions, Giang Minh Thong from Trong La village, Ho Bon commune said, "During the summer holidays, I usually stay at home, do housework, help my parents herd buffaloes, and cook rice. Because we don't have a place to play, we often invite each other to go swimming in the stream when it's hot."

Lack of playgrounds is not only a disadvantage for disadvantaged children but also a concern for parents. Because life is still difficult, taking children out for summer vacations is impossible for many families. However, we still worry, but we still have to do it to make a living.

Ms. Lu Thi Sau in Ho Bon shared: "I'm very worried but there's nothing to be done. Every day, my husband and I have to go to work in the fields from early morning, so the family just lets them play with each other."

Ho Bon is also one of the last communes of Mu Cang Chai district. With 610 households and 3,040 people, most of them are Mong ethnic people. Life here is still difficult, people do not have enough food to eat, let alone play with their children. Children of primary school age stay home to look after their younger siblings, those around 10 years old and above have to go with their parents to herd buffaloes, cut grass, and help their families with farming. It is said to be a 3-month summer vacation, but this has almost become a season of work, helping their families financially .

In their free time, the children's games are just spontaneous, self-directed games with dirt, rocks, and grass. Due to the lack of playgrounds, many children also go to streams to bathe or climb trees for entertainment during the summer. These spontaneous games always have the potential to lead to accidents, unfortunate risks with unpredictable consequences.

Mr. Sung A Binh - Chairman of Ho Bon Commune People's Committee shared: "After the end of the school year, the schools handed over the children to their families. The Ho Bon Commune Party Committee and government directed the sectors, organizations, especially the Commune Youth Union to go to villages, hamlets and families to propagate and remind parents to look after their children themselves, regularly remind them not to go swimming in streams and play dangerous games, to limit injuries and drowning in children."

Due to complex terrain conditions, sparse population, and lack of facilities, gathering and maintaining summer activities for children in most communes and towns in Mu Cang Chai district still faces many difficulties.

To manage andeducate children during the summer, after schools organized the handover of boarding school students back to their localities, communes did a good job of directing sectors and organizations, especially the Youth Union, to coordinate with villages and hamlets, regularly propagating and mobilizing families to manage their children well at home, avoiding unfortunate situations from happening.

Currently, in Mu Cang Chai district, there are 22 teams, 219 branches, 22 general managers, 9,023 team members, 785 children and 5,176 children.

Being a mountainous district with a sparse population, complex terrain, and difficult transportation, gathering children to organize activities still faces many obstacles. Therefore, in the summer, children in the highlands often seek out dangerous games such as climbing trees, bathing in rivers and streams... the risk of accidents, injuries, and drowning is always latent.

Mr. Giang A Ly - Secretary of Mu Cang Chai District Youth Union said: In order for children to have a healthy playground during the summer, Mu Cang Chai District Youth Union has developed a plan to implement management and education activities for youth, children and students during the summer.

Organize weekly summer activities for children. In particular, the district youth union focuses on experiential activities and introduces cultural features and preserves the cultural identity of the Mong people such as: Khen dancing, flute playing, embroidery and painting patterns on fabric with beeswax.

"In addition, we direct the organization of activities to equip children with knowledge and life skills to protect themselves, prevent violence and abuse, and prevent injuries. Thereby creating a safe and friendly environment for children, helping them have a fulfilling summer" - Secretary of the Youth Union Giang A Ly said.

In fact, children really need a proper playground in the summer. Organizing playgrounds and summer activities for children. Therefore, it is necessary to have the cooperation of families, organizations and the participation of local authorities. Hopefully, children will be able to participate in many types of useful activities, to truly have a joyful, healthy and safe summer.
