During the period before Tet and Lunar New Year 2025, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital continuously received cases of serious complications due to unsafe filler injections at home or at unlicensed facilities.
On February 4, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital received a 29-year-old female patient ( Hanoi ) with complete loss of vision in her left eye, pain in the eye socket and left side of her head, and weakness in the muscles of the eyeball and eyelid.
The patient said she had received cosmetic filler injections at home from an acquaintance (not a doctor). Immediately afterwards, she experienced severe pain, blurred vision, and rapid loss of vision. Doctors determined that the patient had occlusion of the ocular vascular system and central retinal artery, causing severe damage to the optic nerve.
After the intervention, the patient's health condition was temporarily stable. However, the left eye lost vision.
On January 15, a 14-year-old female student (Hanoi) was hospitalized with severe vision loss in her left eye, swollen eyelids, drooping eyelids, and bruising on her forehead and bridge of the nose.
The patient said that because he saw an advertisement on social media and learned about fast and simple nose augmentation with filler injections, he injected himself at home without any knowledge of safe medical procedures.
During the injection, the patient felt a stinging pain, but thought it was normal and continued the injection. Afterwards, the patient felt dizzy, had double vision, and blurred vision. The family took the female student to Viet Duc Friendship Hospital for emergency treatment.

A 14-year-old patient had cosmetic surgery using unknown filler injections at home. |
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Hong Ha, Head of the Department of Maxillofacial, Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery, said that this was a case that surprised him and the doctors because the patient was only 14 years old and had cosmetic surgery with unknown filler injections at home.
What's more unfortunate is that the injector lacked knowledge and injected filler from the blood vessels outside into the blood vessels in the brain, causing cerebral artery occlusion leading to shock with symptoms of blurred vision and double vision. More seriously, it causes narrowing and occlusion of the central retinal artery, leading to reduced or even complete loss of vision.
After being admitted, the female student received emergency intervention using vascular intervention, one of the most modern techniques in the world . This technique uses advanced technology to clear blocked blood vessels, restore blood circulation, save vision and prevent damage to the patient's pupil. Fortunately, after emergency vascular intervention, the female student's vision gradually recovered.
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Hong Ha, improper filler injection can cause embolism, infection, skin necrosis, and even be life-threatening.
Experts recommend that when getting beauty treatments, people should only get filler injections at licensed hospitals and cosmetic clinics. The person performing the procedure must be a doctor with a certificate of practice in cosmetic surgery. Do not inject fillers at home or at facilities that do not meet standards or operating licenses.
If there are signs of complications (swelling, pain, loss of vision, difficulty breathing, etc.), the patient should immediately go to a specialized medical facility for timely emergency treatment.
