MU asked coach Amorim about two new "number 9s". |
Gyokeres was considered Amorim's first choice for the striker position. The pair had worked well together at Sporting Lisbon, and the Portuguese coach had high hopes of reuniting with his former student at Old Trafford. However, the Swedish striker rejected MU to choose Arsenal, signing a 5-year contract worth up to £64 million.
The failure of this deal was a big shock for Amorim, especially in the context of MU's lack of sharpness in attack last season. Rasmus Hojlund only scored 4 goals in the Premier League, and new signing Joshua Zirkzee also failed to make an impression.
Despite adding Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha in the summer, MU still wants to bring in a truly classy "number 9". According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the "Red Devils" leadership is currently asking directly from coach Amorim about the two targets Benjamin Sesko and Nicolas Jackson.
Sesko was of interest to Arsenal before moving to Gyokeres. The Slovenian striker scored 21 goals last season and was on the radar of several big clubs, including Newcastle. RB Leipzig once demanded £100m for Sesko but has now reduced his asking price to around £60m. This is a more accessible fee for United.
Meanwhile, Nicolas Jackson is facing the possibility of leaving Chelsea after the "The Blues" brought in two new strikers, Joao Pedro and Liam Delap. Jackson scored 17 goals in his first season, and another 13 last season, but is no longer part of the long-term plans at Stamford Bridge.
Obviously after the Gyokeres slip, MU is determined to hunt for a quality striker, because that is the most important piece for Amorim to build a squad to compete for the title next season.
