Summer for you

The chirping of cicadas echoes like a wordless symphony through the green foliage, the clusters of bright red royal poinciana flowers on the branches, signaling affectionately: Summer has knocked on the door! For millions of students, summer is the season of adventures and meaningful experiences after a year of hard study.

For a meaningful and useful summer

Head of the Departmentof Education and Training of Long Xuyen City, Duong Kiem Anh, shared: “After months of serious study, children need to relax and have fun. We want them to have a fulfilling summer. However, playing must go hand in hand with development. Therefore, schools in the city always encourage parents to create conditions for their children to participate in extracurricular activities, practice soft skills, or simply experience new things with their families. On the other hand, parents must pay attention to managing their children to ensure safety in the summer (preventing drowning, preventing child violence, etc.)”.

It is undeniable that in modern society, many parents are often busy with work and managing their children's time during the summer becomes a challenge. Some parents tend to let their children freely use electronic devices or send their children to extra classes continuously so as not to "waste" time. However, according to psychologists, overusing technology or taking too much extra classes can cause unwanted consequences.

Ms. Nguyen Thanh Thuy (a parent whose child is studying in secondary school in Long Xuyen City) expressed: “I think summer is the time when children need to rest and have fun. But playing does not mean letting go. My husband and I plan for our children to participate in extracurricular activities, such as: swimming, learning to play an instrument, learning to draw and especially traveling with them. The important thing is to create a balance between studying and playing, so that children do not feel pressured but still learn many useful things”. Ms. Huong believes that listening to children's opinions and interests is very important. “It is not just seeing what your friends send their children to school that you send them to. You have to see what your children really want and like, so that they can develop according to their passion and ability” - Ms. Huong said.

Turn summer into a “treasure trove” of memories and knowledge

Nguyen Minh Anh (6th grade student, Nguyen Trai Secondary School, Long Xuyen City) innocently shared: “What I like most is going back to my maternal grandparents’ hometown to play, bathe in the river, catch fish and run around in the fields. In the city, I rarely get to do that. I also want to go to art class because I really like drawing.” Meanwhile, Le Gia Bao (11th grade student, Thoai Ngoc Hau High School for the Gifted) had more mature thoughts: “This summer, in addition to studying for the graduation exam next year, I want to spend time participating in volunteer activities, especially activities to help children in difficult circumstances. I think that is a way for me to become more mature and appreciate what I have.” The students’ honest sharing partly shows that summer is not only a time when they don’t have to go to school but also a time for them to discover themselves, develop new skills and contribute to society.

To prevent the summer from passing by in vain, turning into a “season of phones” or heavy extra classes, families, schools and organizations need to have clear and diverse directions for children, such as: Diversifying experiential activities. Organizing field trips, camping, trekking, visiting historical sites, museums, traditional craft villages so that children can have fun, expand their knowledge and understanding of the world around them.

Cultural centers, children's houses, and libraries organize a variety of summer activities, free or at a reasonable cost, so that all students have the opportunity to participate through skill courses, such as: Swimming classes, martial arts, survival skills, soft skills (communication, teamwork, problem solving) to help children develop, become more confident and independent. Encourage children to pursue personal interests, such as: Learning musical instruments, painting, sports, etc. Raise parents' awareness of the importance of a balanced summer, avoiding the situation of "cramming" knowledge or letting children become too dependent on technology.

Along with that, parents let their children participate in household chores, help their parents and grandparents, or participate in local volunteer activities so that they understand the value of labor and practice responsibility. Strengthen family ties by reading books together, watching movies, playing games, cooking, or simply chatting and listening to their children's thoughts. These moments will create strong bonds and unforgettable memories. At the same time, allow children to have free time to explore and be creative, without being too constrained by schedules or pre-arranged activities.

Summer is a meaningful gift after a year of hard work. Let's turn the sound of cicadas and the red color of royal poinciana flowers into a melody of joy, maturity and valuable experiences, so that each student can have a truly joyful, meaningful and rewarding summer.
