The school also provides access to ChatGPT Edu - a specialeducation version - to all medical students (MD) and postgraduate students and researchers.

Faris Gulamali, one of the school's future doctors, said he has made the most of this AI tool.

Speaking to CBS News, Gulamali said he has used ChatGPT to prepare for surgeries and improve the way he explains complex diagnoses to patients.

According to Gulamali , ChatGPT Edu helps students relieve a lot of pressure during the stressful and rigorous learning process of the medical industry.

Similarly, Icahn School of Medicine PhD student Vivek Kanpa also said that AI plays a technical support role in complex medical research projects.

“This tool is like a ‘fake’ consultant clinician that I can ask any time of the day,” Kanpa shared.

He added that he can talk to this “virtual mentor” at any time and get support to solve the problems he is facing.

Not only students, Dr. Benjamin Glicksberg, associate professor at the Icahn School of Medicine, also commented that AI is changing the medical industry and the involvement of AI in the process of training doctors is the most remarkable innovation he has witnessed.

However, the use of AI in sensitive fields such as medicine has raised concerns about privacy violations and disclosure of patient information.

In response to these concerns, OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, said it is working closely with universities and medical schools like Icahn to ensure strict privacy standards are followed.

According to OpenAI vice president and general manager of education Leah Belsky, ChatGPT Edu is fully compliant with HIPAA - the federal law that limits the disclosure of health information.

“I think in medicine, especially in the health sector, it’s important for students to learn how to use AI and how to use this technology safely. This helps them learn faster, helps them explore new areas of knowledge, dig deeper into new lessons,” she said.

Ms. Belsky also likened the impact of AI in the 21st-century workplace to the impact of email and the Internet in the 1990s.

In addition to concerns about the risk of patient information leakage, many experts also warn that medical students' over-reliance on ChatGPT and AI technology can reduce the quality of their learning, their sense of autonomy, and have long-term effects on their future professional capacity.
