According to the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR), the investigation focuses on foundational semiconductors used in everything from cars to medical devices and whether China's actions are burdening US commerce.
The office stressed concerns that Beijing's activities are undermining "the competitiveness of our industry, our workers, our critical supply chains, and our economic security."
“We have repeatedly seen the negative impacts of China’s non-market policies and practices in sectors where China aims to dominate global markets,” noted US Trade Representative Katherine Tai.
Previous cases have included steel, aluminum, solar panels, electric vehicles and now semiconductors, according to Tai.
“This approach is allowing Chinese companies to rapidly expand capacity and offer chips at artificially low prices, threatening to cause serious harm,” Ms. Tai commented.
Meanwhile, US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said that analysis of the US semiconductor supply chain showed that two-thirds of the products of the world's largest economy contain foundation chips manufactured in Beijing.
