"The United States will actively revoke visas of Chinese students" - US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on May 28.
“We will also amend our visa issuance criteria to strengthen due diligence on all future visa applications from the People’s Republic of China and Hong Kong,” he added.
According to AFP news agency, the announcement from Secretary of State Marco Rubio showed a defiant attitude, after China criticized his decision a day earlier to suspend visa interviews for students worldwide.
Previously, on May 22, US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem ordered the suspension of Harvard University's Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), which is the legal basis that allows the school to recruit foreign students.
Ms. Noem accused Harvard University of "encouraging violence, anti-Semitism, and collaborating with the Chinese Communist Party on campus."
China has not yet commented on Secretary Rubio's latest announcement.
Chinese students have long been a major source of funding for American universities, which rely on full-tuition international students. China will host 277,398 students in the 2023-24 academic year, although India has taken the lead for the first time in years.
During his first term, Mr. Trump also targeted Chinese students, but focused mainly on those studying in sensitive fields or with clear ties to the Chinese military.
It is unclear how much of an escalation Mr Rubio's announcement marks.
In another development, the New York Times reported that the US has suspended the sale of some important US technologies to China, including those related to aircraft engines, semiconductors and some chemicals.
Citing two sources familiar with the matter, the newspaper said the move was in response to China's recent restrictions on exports of critical minerals to the United States.
