Like many other young men, in March 1996, Nguyen Huu Toan received a call to join the army. He temporarily left his family (Yen Ky commune, Ha Hoa district, Phu Tho) to fulfill his military service. After the new soldier training, Nguyen Huu Toan was selected to attend the elementary management class at the Military School of Military Region 2. After studying, he was assigned to work in the kitchen of Company 1, Battalion 3, Brigade 297, specializing in management and cooking, and was transferred to the professional soldier regime. But since the company kitchen merged into the battalion kitchen, Nguyen Huu Toan only worked as a cook.
As an anti-aircraft artillery unit, often having to perform training tasks and be on standby for combat, feeding soldiers plays a very important role. Realizing that, Nguyen Huu Toan always brings all his sense of responsibility and accumulated knowledge and experience to serve the soldiers. There were times when the kitchen had several hundred servings per meal, but he still took care of all breakfast, lunch and dinner. Regardless of whether it was early or late, noon or night, whether the soldiers ate at the barracks or marched to the training ground, wherever he was, he could, together with other soldiers, bring the soldiers delicious meals. The types of food and food cooked in the kitchen were mainly "homegrown", products that the unit grew and raised itself, so the quality was very assured. However, there were still products that had to be purchased from outside, but Nguyen Huu Toan always paid attention to receiving food and food that was guaranteed to be fresh, of the right weight, and of the right type. To ensure that the soldiers eat according to the standards, regimes, and preparation process, he always closely follows and works with the soldiers until the food is divided onto plates. The dining area and kitchen are regularly cleaned and arranged neatly; cooking and preparing dishes according to the menu approved by superiors.
In addition, Nguyen Huu Toan regularly listens to the feedback of company commanders and in the activities of the Cultural and Political Day, promptly overcomes and corrects the limitations in organizing cooking to serve the soldiers. The job of "serving a hundred families" is very difficult, but because of his love and passion for cooking, Nguyen Huu Toan has been attached to it for nearly 30 years.
Major Pham Quang Trang, Battalion Commander, Battalion 3, Brigade 297 affirmed: "Comrade Nguyen Huu Toan is a veteran cook, has a lot of experience in preparing food, cooks many dishes suitable for soldiers' tastes; is diligent, hard-working, lives sincerely, openly, is close to his teammates, is loved by many people, and has been awarded for many consecutive years".
