Male math student achieved 8.5 IELTS score on first attempt

Diligent, diligent in studying English, applying appropriate review methods, Nguyen Hong Quan achieved 8.5 IELTS points on the first test in July 2022, in which listening and reading skills achieved a score of 9.0.

Nguyen Hong Quan, a 12th grade math student at Nguyen Tat Thanh High School for the Gifted (Yen Bai province). Quan has loved English since he was a child. In grades 5 and 6, Quan won first prize in the national English Olympic competition. In grade 9, Quan won first prize in the provincial English competition for excellent students.

Talking about the secret to achieving a high IELTS score, Quan said it was the result of a journey of effort in reviewing knowledge and practicing skills.

Since entering high school, Quan has identified English as a necessary skill for studying, communicating in life and work in the future. In grade 10, Quan studied and practiced IELTS. According to Quan, before taking the test, you must determine your goals and make a suitable study plan to achieve results.

Sharing about his IELTS learning method, Quan said: “Every day, I try to solve 1-2 questions, solving all 4 skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. I try to practice to be able to practice my test-solving skills and get used to the test structure. Regarding the materials used to review for the IELTS test, I use the Cambridge IELTS book because the questions are quite similar to the real test.”

For listening and reading, Quan believes that these are two skills that can be improved quickly by practicing a lot. “I read newspapers about science, technology, and education in English to improve my vocabulary, grammar, and learn about social knowledge,” Quan said.

To improve his English skills, in grade 11, Quan participated in the national English exam preparation course. This helped Quan equip himself with basic knowledge, from which he focused on improving his vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure.

Thanks to his IELTS score of 8.5, Quan was exempted from taking the English exam in the 2023 high school graduation exam. However, Quan still registered to take this exam to test his ability and achieved a score of 10 in English.

Before taking the graduation exam, Quan applied for a combination of his high school transcript and IELTS score and was admitted to the International Business program at the Foreign Trade University. Quan said that when he entered university, he would take advantage of his English skills to access a wealth of foreign resources.

The results "harvested" during the learning process at Nguyen Tat Thanh High School for the Gifted have motivated Quan to continue to conquer his future goals.

In addition to achieving an excellent IELTS score of 8.5, Quan also has many achievements such as: the title of Outstanding Citizen of Yen Bai province in 2022, third prize in the national excellent student exam in English in the 12th grade.

Although he is a math major, Quan chose to take the English exam. This is his disadvantage. However, he knows how to overcome difficulties to study well.”
