Unprecedented achievement

Among the 1,088 students receiving their diplomas at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology on April 25 and 26, La Nguyen Gia Hy - Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering was the student with outstanding achievements. Huy was awarded a Gold Medal by the school and honored at the graduation ceremony.

The male student graduated half a year early, with excellent grades, with a cumulative GPA of 4/4.0 - a rare achievement in the history of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology. Before Gia Hy, the school had students with a GPA of 4.0 but did not graduate early.

In addition to achieving a perfect cumulative GPA, Gia Hy also possesses a series of great achievements, such as: IELTS certificate 8.0; Title of 5-good student at National University and school level in 2023, 2024; Excellent student in the 2023-2024 school year; Received a scholarship to encourage learning for 6 consecutive semesters,...

"I finished the program at the end of last year and found out I had a 4.0 GPA before Tet. I was very happy but not surprised because this was the goal in my plan," Hy said.

Once a student specializing in Mathematics at the Gifted High School (Ho Chi Minh City National University), Gia Hy was admitted directly to Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology thanks to winning the second prize in the national Mathematics exam. During high school, Hy was also a "golden face" in the exams: Gold medal in the 30/4 Olympic, grade 10, first prize in the excellent student of Ho Chi Minh City, grade 11, and achieved a perfect score in the SASMO (Singapore & Asian Schools Math Olympiad) competition.

Talking about the reason for pursuing a major in artificial intelligence (AI), Hy said his passion for this field started from the days when he was curious about AlphaGo - the AI system that could defeat the world's Go master.

“In recent years, the emergence of AI models such as ChatGPT or Deepseek has made me more curious and eager to learn more about how these systems work. School subjects such as machine learning and introduction to artificial intelligence have helped me access a systematic knowledge base, thereby further clarifying my passion and long-term orientation in this field,” Gia Hy shared.

Success comes from preparation

Since entering Polytechnic, Hy has determined that there are no shortcuts to studying. She proactively plans and makes effective use of her time to maintain her achievements without having to study all night. Outside of school, Hy reads books, listens to music every day and plays sports on weekends to stay positive.

During the summer vacation, Hy self-studied basic and specialized subjects. When the school year started, he had grasped the basic content, making it easier to review for exams and do homework. The male student planned his subjects from the beginning of the year, found textbooks and materials, and studied online in advance.

Instead of studying by slides because they are short, Hy still reads the textbooks carefully – each book is 400-500 pages long and combines slides for deep understanding. She also watches more videos on YouTube and takes exams from other schools to expand her knowledge. Thanks to that, Hy has maintained high scores and received scholarships continuously for 6 semesters.

Although he doesn't like all the subjects, Hy keeps the discipline to study by himself every day, regularly reads the textbook and does the exercises. To shorten the study time, he carefully studies the regulations and makes a suitable study plan.

"Knowing that I needed to complete my major project before my graduation project, I started working early in my third year. That was also the most stressful period because I had to do my project, find an internship, and study the most difficult subject, Programming Language Principles," Hy said.

Completing the project early helped Hy have an easy final semester with only 7 credits, including the graduation project. He used this time to improve his social studies and got A's in all of them. The only thing he regrets about his student life is not participating in scientific research earlier. It was not until the end of his third year that Hy started with two projects: a Chatbot for admissions consulting and an AI system for sorting garbage.

With the orientation of studying for a PhD in Artificial Intelligence, Hy is applying to a number of universities in Asia, Europe, and the US. The male student prioritizes master's or doctoral programs with full scholarships.

During his years at university, Gia Hy participated in many research projects in the field of AI such as: Admissions consulting chatbot, AI waste classification system... In particular, his graduation thesis on waste classification using self-supervised learning not only has academic significance but also high practical value.

I am currently a member of the URA research group under the guidance of Associate Professor, Dr. Quan Thanh Tho, and the main author of a scientific paper submitted to an international conference on computer vision. The paper proposes an unsupervised learning method that helps the model classify images without the need for human-provided labels.
