- In recent times, along with expanding the area and increasing coverage, all levels, sectors and people of Lang Son province have paid attention to improving the quality, productivity and economic value of forests.
During a business trip in mid-October 2025, we had the opportunity to visit and record at the forest of Mr. Ma Van Dong's family, Con Quan village, Dinh Lap commune. Mr. Dong's family currently owns a total of 30 hectares of forest, with a diverse structure including: 3 hectares of 3-year-old eucalyptus, 4 hectares of 1-year-old acacia, 15 hectares of 7-year-old pine and 8 hectares of pine over 17 years old.
His family's main source of income from the forest is currently very stable, earning about 3-4 tons of pine resin each year, bringing in a value of over 100 million VND. In addition, there is income from timber exploitation. In 2024 alone, the exploitation of 4 hectares of pine forest brought the family 300 million VND. The most notable thing in Mr. Dong's family's forest economic model is that in parallel with expanding the area, he focuses on improving the quality of planted forests. Currently, 100% of his family's forest area is certified.

Mr. Ma Van Dong excitedly said: Participating in certified forest production has brought many obvious benefits, not only helping to improve forest quality but also increasing income value from both pine resin and timber exploitation. To maintain the certificate, my family always strictly follows the principles and criteria. During the management process, we focus on making clear plans and fully recording management, exploitation and protection activities.
Not only Mr. Dong's family, from 2020 to now, the whole province has had over 15,136 hectares of certified forest (VFCS/PEFC, dual VFCS and FSC certification) in the old Dinh Lap district by businesses and over 1,250 households participating, reaching over 300% of the target set for the 2020 - 2025 period.

Along with the focus on forest certification, to improve productivity, quality and value of planted forests, the shift from intensive cultivation of short-term raw materials and small timber to planting new tree species, towards large timber trees and indigenous trees with high economic value is also strongly implemented in Lang Son . Up to now, the whole province has a total forest area of nearly 45,000 hectares, of which the large timber forest area is 7,055 hectares, the productivity of planted forest wood has been improved, reaching from 14 - 20m³/ha.
Quoc Khanh Commune is an example. The commune has a large forestry land area, reaching nearly 12,748 hectares, of which production forests account for over 10,125 hectares. This is a valuable potential for the commune to implement the province's policy of shifting from growing short-term raw materials to growing large timber forests and native trees with high economic value.
Ms. Nong Thi Kim Oanh, Chairwoman of the People's Committee of Quoc Khanh Commune, emphasized: The Party Committee and the Commune Government have been encouraging people to prioritize new varieties such as tissue-cultured high-yield Eucalyptus to grow large timber and to increase the area of traditional non-timber forest products, especially star anise and cinnamon, to improve productivity and quality. Focusing on these tree species, combined with participation in production chains, will certainly increase the sustainable income value for people.
The transformation does not stop at timber but also focuses on high-value non-timber forest products, typically star anise and cinnamon. Provincial authorities and people have implemented solutions to improve the productivity, quality and economic value of star anise, and in the past 5 years, the province has implemented 3 organic star anise models/projects with a total area of over 291 hectares. In particular, the chain model of production, processing and consumption of products has been formed and developed. The whole province has established and is forming 16 chains of forestry products of wood, cinnamon, star anise and pine resin. This helps forest products access a wider market, ensuring stable output, the clearest evidence is that 3 star anise products have been certified with 4-star OCOP.

Improving forest quality will be difficult to succeed without high-quality plant varieties. Therefore, in recent times, all levels, sectors and people in the province have actively applied science and technology in researching and producing high-quality forestry tree varieties, thereby prioritizing hybrid Acacia and high-yielding Eucalyptus varieties of tissue culture origin to serve large timber planting with longer business cycles (from 10 years or more). At the same time, each year, facilities provide about 310 million seedlings of all kinds/year, including many new varieties.
Mr. Nguyen Huu Chien, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Lang Son province, affirmed: In recent years, thanks to the synchronous implementation of solutions to improve forest quality, Lang Son forestry sectors have achieved encouraging achievements; forest cover rate has increased over the years (to date reaching 64.1%); productivity and forest quality have increasingly improved, contributing to increasing the production value of the forestry sector (annually reaching over 4,000 billion VND); timber exploitation output in the period of 2021 - 2025 reached over 2.1 million m³, exceeding 120.4% of the set plan... One of the outstanding achievements is the granting of sustainable forest management certificates and forest planting area codes to expand export markets; Selecting new varieties of economic value, shifting from planting small timber forests to planting large timber forests and native trees... This achievement is due to the attention of Party committees and authorities at all levels in directing and effectively implementing Resolution No. 30-NQ/TU dated June 3, 2021 of the Provincial Party Committee on sustainable forestry development in Lang Son province for the period 2021 - 2030.
In the coming time, to continue promoting the achievements, the Department of Agriculture and Environment will continue to advise the Provincial People's Committee to direct sectors and localities to effectively manage, protect and develop forests in a sustainable manner , promoting the multi-purpose nature of forests. In particular, focusing on perfecting mechanisms and policies, improving the effectiveness of propaganda work, innovating production, promoting the application of science and technology, especially research and transfer of high-quality and productive forestry varieties, remote sensing technology, AI in forest protection and development management, developing carbon credit markets, mobilizing and effectively using investment resources, focusing on processing and developing forest product markets.

With the determination of the entire political system and the consensus of the people, Lang Son is firmly making forestry a key production sector, making an important contribution to sustainable development and enriching the people in the province.
Lang Son sets goals for the period 2025 - 2030: Maintain forest cover at 65% by 2030, plantation timber productivity reaches 18 - 20 m³/ha/year, large timber plantation 1,500 ha/year, forestry value growth reaches 7.2% - 7.4%/year, granting an additional 10,000 ha of forest certificates, establishing 10 production and product consumption linkage chains. |
