What to do when taking fake medicine?

Doctor Nguyen Huy Hoang, Vietnam - Russia Hypertension Center, Ministry of National Defense said that if you have taken fake medicine, you should stop using it immediately. Whether you have taken only one dose or many doses, continued use can make your health worse.

Patients should promptly contact their doctor or go to the nearest medical facility for examination and consultation. Declaring the specific type of medication used, dosage and duration of use will assist in the treatment and monitoring process.

Closely monitor for unusual symptoms such as headache, nausea, digestive disorders, allergies... and record the progression of symptoms to provide to medical staff.

Do not throw away the drug packaging, as this is important evidence to help determine the origin and ingredients of counterfeit drugs.

Patients should also report counterfeit drugs to authorities such as the Department of Health, the Drug Administration or local police to protect themselves and help prevent danger to the community.

To avoid buying fake drugs, patients should learn the product name, making sure not to confuse functional foods (health-supporting effects) and drugs (treatment effects).

Read the product label or packaging carefully, find out information about the ingredients, main active ingredients, and whether the content is enough for the body's daily recommendation. Find out about secondary ingredients including preservatives, flavorings, food colorings, allergens or toxic substances.

Read the dosage and instructions for use as recommended by the manufacturer, printed on the label or quality declaration sheet usually included in the product box. Do not increase the dose on your own to avoid poisoning. Children, pregnant women, and people with underlying diseases should consult a doctor if they want to take the drug.

Check information about the manufacturer, certificates of compliance with standards such as GMP, ISO, HACCP, or Ministry of Health license. You can check barcodes and QR codes to verify product information.

Check the expiry date of the medicine, avoid buying products that are close to the expiry date or have damaged packaging.
