According to TASS news agency (Russia), in a speech at the State Duma (Lower House) on February 19, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated: "We share a small border with North Korea and we are not indifferent to everything that is happening on the Korean peninsula."
According to him, Moscow always supports eliminating all risks on the Korean peninsula.
Referring to the Russia-North Korea Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement that President Vladimir Putin signed in June last year in Pyongyang, Foreign Minister Lavrov said that the agreement essentially aims to promote bilateral cooperation in all areas, from economics, humanitarian, education, culture to military and defense-technical cooperation.
However, the head of Russian diplomacy noted that in this document there is a very important provision, stating that if one of the two countries falls into conflict, the other country will provide all necessary support, including military support.
Regarding the situation on the Korean Peninsula, on February 20, the South Korean Ministry of Defense announced that on February 20, the country and the United States conducted their first joint air force exercise this year, with the participation of at least one B-1B bomber, a US F-16 fighter jet, and South Korean F-35A and F-15K fighters.
In the announcement, the South Korean Defense Ministry emphasized: "This training activity is carried out to demonstrate the US's extended deterrence capability against nuclear and missile threats from North Korea, while enhancing the interoperability of the South Korea-US joint forces."
North Korea has always opposed such drills on the Korean peninsula, saying they pose a threat to Pyongyang's national security.
