The Ukrainian military said it had shot down 58 of the 59 drones deployed by Russia. The Ukrainian air force described it as a record attack by Iranian-made “suicide” drones. President Volodymyr Zelensky said all 36 drones targeting Kiev had been destroyed.
The attacks came as the capital Kiev celebrated its founding 1,541 years ago.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko said it was the 14th attack this month, with falling debris killing a 41-year-old man and injuring several others.
The Ukrainian Air Force said Russia had targeted key infrastructure and military facilities in central Ukraine and especially the Kiev region.
Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuri Ihnat told Ukrainian television that a combination of fighter jets and mobile air defense systems were used to shoot down the Russian drone.
He did not say what systems were deployed. However, he did say Ukraine used the NASAMS air defense system to destroy the Shahed drone.
According to Reuters , Moscow did not comment on the attacks. In another development, Russian media quoted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov as reiterating that Moscow's goals in Ukraine would be achieved.
Earlier on May 27, the Ukrainian Air Force thanked the United States for sending additional NASAMS systems, as well as US-made Stinger mobile systems used to shoot down drones, as part of the US aid package for April.
Over the weekend, Kiev indicated that its forces were ready to launch a counteroffensive to retake territory that Russia has controlled for the past 15 months.
