According to a statement posted on the ministry's social media account, Mr. Umerov also thanked Mr. Austin for "his continuous and comprehensive support since the beginning of Russia's war in Ukraine," Reuters news agency reported.
In related news, Ukraine's air force said it shot down all 29 drones launched by Russia into eight regions of the Eastern European country in a nighttime attack that officials said caused only minor damage.
The force also said that Russia also launched three Kh-59 guided missiles in the attack last night.
According to the governor of the central Cherkasy region, debris damaged the windows of a private business, while the governors of the Kiev, Poltava and Kirovohrad regions reported no damage to infrastructure or casualties.
The governor of the Mykolaiv region announced that the Ukrainian air force shot down five drones but did not provide details about the damage.
Meanwhile, the Kherson governor said that eight other drones were shot down in the southern Kherson region.
In the Donbass region, a Ukrainian National Guard officer said the pace of Russian forces' offensive had not slowed down amid Kiev's offensive in the western Russian province of Kursk.
Regarding the situation in Kursk, Ukraine claims that its cross-border operation has advanced 1-2 km into the province.
On the evening of August 14, acting Governor of Kursk Alexei Smirnov announced that the provincial authorities had decided to evacuate civilians from the Glushkov district, as Ukrainian forces continued to advance into the border area.
Glushkov district borders Ukraine and has a population of about 20,000. On the Telegram app, Mr. Smirnov said the police and other state agencies would coordinate the evacuation. Russian officials said that nearly 200,000 people had been evacuated after the attack.
In another development, The Times reported that British ministers are trying to convince allies to allow Ukraine to use Storm Shadow cruise missiles to strike inside Russia.
