Storm No. 10 damaged many items at Le Thi Bach Cat Secondary School, Cua Lo Ward, including blowing off the roof of a 3-story classroom building, collapsing a fence more than 30 meters long, and damaging the student parking garage.

Joining the support force, Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Thai Son, Deputy Head of the Collection Team, Nghe An Provincial Military Command, said: Immediately after the storm, the unit mobilized more than 70 officers and soldiers to support flood relief for Nghi Thuy Primary School, Nghi Thu Primary School and Le Thi Bach Cat Secondary School. The unit is determined to complete the cleanup within the day so that the schools can soon stabilize their classrooms.

According to the People's Committee of Cua Lo Ward, 23/26 schools in the area were severely affected, mainly with damaged roofs, classrooms, administration buildings, and teaching equipment. Some schools such as Xanh Tue Duc Primary and Secondary School had their ceilings collapsed, while Hai Hoa Secondary School and Thu Thuy Primary School were flooded more than 1 meter deep due to high tides. As for Nghi Thuy Primary School, the 2-story classroom building built in 1982 was severely damaged, posing a potential safety risk.

At Thu Thuy Primary School on the morning of September 30, nearly 100 teachers, ward police and officers and soldiers of local military units were mobilized to urgently overcome the consequences of the storm and flood. This is one of the schools that suffered the most damage, both in terms of facilities and teaching equipment. The recovery also encountered many difficulties because the current funding source mainly depends on the school or from sources calling for support.

In mountainous areas, heavy rain collapsed the fence of Yen Hoa Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities; landslides occurred at the Pa Ty hamlet (Yen Tinh Primary School); Hoan Long Primary School (Tan Phu) had its classroom roof blown off, and its office flooded...

Along with the cleanup, the schools also consulted local authorities to strengthen their facilities. With the attention and contribution of forces in speeding up the progress of overcoming the consequences of the storm, the schools are determined to maintain the learning routine for students as soon as possible.

Inspecting the storm and flood recovery work at schools in Cua Lo ward on September 30, Director of the Department of Education and Training Thai Van Thanh shared the difficulties and hardships of the schools when they continuously faced two dangerous storms in just one month. The Department's leaders highly appreciated the efforts of the schools, the urgent and timely intervention of local authorities and functional forces in supporting schools to overcome storms and floods.

Director of the Department of Education and Training Thai Van Thanh also acknowledged the flexibility of schools such as Nghi Tan Secondary School and Thu Thuy Primary School, although many classrooms are currently damaged and cannot be put into use, they have quickly come up with solutions such as transferring functional rooms and offices to prioritize classrooms for students.

According to reports from schools, on September 30, cleaning and repairing damage will soon be completed. It is expected that on Thursday morning (October 2), students in Cua Lo ward will return to school.

Director of Nghe An Department of Education and Training Thai Van Thanh also requested localities to promptly compile detailed statistics of damages, especially some degraded and damaged works, and send them to the Department and the province to have a plan to soon arrange emergency construction funds, ensuring that students' studies are not interrupted.

In the coming time, the Department hopes that localities and schools will take advantage of funding sources, support sources, and call for socialization to gradually overcome the damage. On this occasion, the Department of Education and Training has also supported a part of the funding to encourage schools.

According to statistics from the Nghe An Department of Education and Training, during storm No. 10, hundreds of schools in the area were affected, including 45 schools flooded, 18 schools suffered landslides, 131 schools had corrugated iron roofs of classrooms and functional rooms blown off, 91 schools had tiled roofs blown off, 85 schools had their fences collapsed, 110 schools had some items collapsed or had their garage roofs blown off. The estimated damage to the whole sector is more than 300 billion VND.

It is worrying that in some localities in Tan Ky, Yen Thanh, Nghia Dan, Quy Chau (old) districts, water continues to rise, many schools are deeply submerged in floodwater. It is expected that this week, some schools will not be able to return to school.

Storm No. 10 left behind heavy damage to school facilities, but with the timely attention and direction of the Education sector and localities, the participation of forces has become the driving force for schools to overcome difficulties, welcome students back soon, and stabilize learning routines.
