Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 50%

Starting to be implemented in Nghe An from the 2024 Spring crop, with a total area of over 5,713 hectares; by this year's Spring crop, in addition to the initial 5 localities of Nam Dan, Nghi Loc, Hung Nguyen, Dien Chau and Do Luong, 2 more localities have participated in the Project "Alternate Wet and Dry Irrigation - Solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in sustainable rice cultivation" namely Thanh Chuong and Quynh Luu, with a total area increased to 20,029 hectares.

While saving the number of irrigations and the amount of water, the average rice yield will increase slightly, reduce pests and diseases, and especially, from the project's activities, a brand of rice with reduced emissions will be built, creating advantages in export and selling price, developing the brand; from there, farmers' income will increase not only from selling carbon credits, increasing productivity but also from increasing rice prices. This farming method also helps change people's farming practices, contributing to creating diverse field ecology, protecting and improving the quality of rice production resources.

“The success of implementing the project on a large scale has proven the superiority of the alternating flooding and drying irrigation technique, which is the basis and premise to continue expanding the area of water-saving irrigation, reducing emissions on a larger area, towards green farming, environmentally friendly, serving sustainable development, bringing value to producers and localities”, affirmed Dr. Vu Duy Hoang - Deputy Director of the Center for Organic Agriculture - Vietnam Academy of Agriculture.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Dinh Tho - Deputy Director of the Institute of Strategy and Policy on Agriculture and Environment assessed that this is the right and potential direction, in line with the policies and orientations of the province and the country.

Participating in this project brings great benefits to producers, irrigation management companies and localities, in the short term in terms of increasing productivity, reducing pests and diseases, saving irrigation costs and irrigation water, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In the coming time, when the carbon credit market is formed and bilateral agreement mechanisms are signed, Nghe An has prepared early and can take the lead in participating in these carbon credit market mechanisms.

At the workshop, Mr. Phan Tien Thanh - representative of Green Carbon Japan Vietnam Co., Ltd. - the project implementation unit in Nghe An, added: In addition to the activities of implementing the construction and sale of carbon credits, the company has also signed a contract with TH Rice Company to purchase rice produced in a way that reduces greenhouse gas emissions, contributing significantly to creating a stable consumption market and increasing production value for farmers. At the same time, it will build a rice brand and manage it according to international standards to ensure pesticide residues, thereby exporting to international markets. With such potential, it is hoped to promote an increase of about 10% in farmers' income.
