Republican Congressman George Santos was charged with 13 crimes, including perjury, money laundering and fraud.
The US Department of Justice announced today that it has arrested Republican Congressman George Santos, 34. Federal prosecutors have filed a 13-count indictment against Santos and he will appear in federal court in Long Island, New York.
"This indictment seeks to hold Santos accountable for the fraudulent schemes and blatant misrepresentations that Santos repeatedly lied to gain entry into Congress and enrich himself," said federal prosecutor Breon Peace.
Santos is accused of using campaign funds to buy expensive clothes and cars. The congressman also faces charges of defrauding more than $24,000 in unemployment benefits and falsely reporting income and assets.

Santos could face up to 20 years in prison, according to the US Department of Justice. Santos previously admitted to lying about his education and personal finances, but denied the more serious charges.
Under US law, the charges against Santos do not affect his status as a member of Congress. There is nothing in the US Constitution that prevents lawmakers who are indicted or convicted from serving their duties, except in cases of treason, according to the 14th Amendment.
The US House of Representatives rules allow a member who is indicted to continue to contribute. However, if the person is sentenced to more than two years in prison, they will not be able to vote in Congress or on committee votes.
Santos defeated Democratic challenger Robert Zimmerman in November 2022 to win a seat in the US House of Representatives representing New York's Long Island district. His victory helped the Republican Party gain a majority in the House of Representatives by nine seats.
