Thai San's full name is Nguyen Dinh Thai San, born in 1974 in Da Lat. While a student of Chemistry at Da Lat University, Thai San joined the university's art troupe, performing French and Russian songs.

In 1989, Thai San was taken to the film set by her cousin, singer and actress Thanh Lan, to meet director Le Hoang Hoa, who was choosing scenes for a film in Da Lat.
