On the morning of November 15, the University of Transport held a ceremony to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the school's tradition and receive the First Class Labor Medal.
80 years ago today, President Ho Chi Minh signed a decree to reopen a number of universities and colleges, including the Indochina College of Public Works - the predecessor of the University of Transport.
However, the school's history began 43 years earlier, in 1902, when the Indochina government established the School of Secretaries and Public Works Professionals.
In 1960, the first undergraduate class of the school opened in the context of war with 117 students. It was not until 1962 that the school took its current name.
Looking back on eight decades of cultivating people to “pave the way”, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung mentioned the country’s vital projects created by engineers, experts, and scientists who graduated from the University of Transport.

Typical of these projects is the railway from Hanoi to Muc Nam Quan, the first major project of the country connecting Hanoi with socialist countries, which was restored right after the successful resistance war against France.
In peacetime, the pride of the teachers and students of the University of Transport is the expansion of National Highway 1, the inter-provincial expressways opening across the country, the pioneering urban railway projects in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and currently the North-South high-speed railway.
“Those projects are not only symbols of infrastructure development, but also a testament to the stature, intelligence and mettle of Vietnam - where generations of teachers and students of the University of Transport have contributed with their intelligence, passion, sweat and above all, the responsibility of scientists in the task of protecting, building and developing the country,” said the Deputy Prime Minister.
Also at the event, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung assigned major goals to the University of Transport. Accordingly, in the next 5 years, the school must be in the top 250-300 universities in Asia, with some key majors in the top 200.
By 2030, the school needs to achieve at least 50% of its training programs meeting international standards, focusing on training high-quality engineers to meet the human resource needs of national projects such as the North-South Expressway Phase 2 and the urban railway system and high-speed railway.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Hung - Principal of the University of Transport and Information Technology, the school plays the role of a strategic consulting center for the Government, the National Assembly and the country on the transport industry.

The school accepted the Deputy Prime Minister's instructions and committed to seriously implementing the goals of university rankings, expanding pedagogical space, building a regional innovation and digital transformation ecosystem, and building key laboratories and international-class research centers.
Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung was a student of the 1977-1983 course of the University of Transport (then called the University of Railway and Road Transport). He is currently the Chairman of the University's Alumni Network.
