Sweet and fragrant My Hoa honey

Implementing the One Commune One Product (OCOP) program, many production facilities and business households in Tan Lac district have focused on developing products to exploit the potential and advantages of the locality. In Ngay hamlet, My Hoa commune, thanks to improved beekeeping methods, the high-quality, distinctive My Hoa honey product has been created and was awarded a 3-star OCOP product in 2023.

My Hoa honey (My Hoa commune, Tan Lac district) has been recognized as a 3-star OCOP product at the provincial level.

We visited the honey bee farming model of Mr. Bui Van Tuong in Ngay hamlet. Mr. Tuong is widely known as a model farmer who excels in both production and business, being both hardworking and skilled in commerce. Previously, his family mainly raised bees for their own needs and to give to relatives. In November 2017, recognizing market demand, he and 12 other households in the commune established the My Hoa Honey Bee Farming Cooperative. He is currently the head of the honey bee farming cooperative in Ngay hamlet and one of the long-standing bee farmers in the hamlet.

Mr. Tuong shared: "In the early days of beekeeping, I maintained over 5 colonies. Currently, my family has more than 80 bee colonies, yielding 500-550 liters of honey annually. The cooperative always reminds its members to ensure proper techniques from bee care, colony splitting, honey harvesting, to bee breeds. Especially in disease prevention and treatment, the members use biological methods and avoid antibiotics that could affect honey quality."

Besides beekeeping for honey production, members of the My Hoa Honey Beekeeping Cooperative also sell pollen, beeswax, and bee colonies to the market, contributing to increased income and improved living standards. With honey selling for 200,000 - 250,000 VND/liter, the cooperative earns over 1 billion VND annually. Having been recognized as a 3-star OCOP product, My Hoa honey is now available in many safe food stores both within and outside the district.

Besides providing livelihoods for the people, beekeeping offers a double benefit: stimulating pollination of fruit trees and contributing to the control of insects and pests on crops. My Hoa honey is renowned for its golden hue, sweet taste, distinctive aroma, and rich mineral and vitamin content, which helps improve health. The honey product has clear barcodes and traceability labels, and is well-regarded by consumers. Furthermore, beekeeping for honey production is a sustainable form of natural resource exploitation, contributing to environmental protection and increasing income for the people.

Comrade Pham Thi Minh Chuc, Secretary of the Party Committee of My Hoa commune, said: Recognizing that beekeeping is suitable for the local natural conditions and climate, the people in the commune have developed and expanded the honey bee farming model, contributing to the development of the local economy . In addition, the fact that My Hoa honey products have achieved OCOP 3-star standard has contributed to transforming the production methods of the people in the commune, aiming towards restructuring the agricultural sector associated with building new rural areas and gradually helping My Hoa honey products establish themselves and expand further in the market.
