These days, the Dao people in Na Lung village are harvesting taro (photo above). This crop has just been propagated and expanded in the area in recent years. Ms. Ly Thi Hang said: Taro is very suitable for the soil and climate here, the plant is growing well, has high yield and delicious quality, so it is favored by many people; compared to other crops, taro brings higher economic value. "If I plant cassava on 1 hectare, I can sell it for about 20 million VND, if I plant taro, 1 ton is 15 million VND, 1 hectare I can grow about 7 - 8 tons", Ms. Ly Thi Hang, Na Lung village, Coc My commune, Bat Xat district shared.

Previously, taro was only grown by people around the hills to improve meals and raise livestock. However, due to the effectiveness and delicious quality of the tubers, the market demand is increasing, so the area is expanded and gradually becomes one of the main crops, contributing to hunger eradication and poverty reduction in the locality. "From 2023, only a few households in the village have planted 1 - 2 hectares. 1 hectare brings in an income of over 100 million VND. From the effective development of taro, people have followed the example of previous households to grow. By this year, some households have grown a lot", said Ms. Ly Thi Van, Secretary of the Party Cell of Na Lung village, Coc My commune, Bat Xat district.

Taro is suitable for the soil and climate in Na Lung village, so the plant grows well and has high productivity.

Growing taro from sowing to harvesting takes about 6 months, does not require much investment capital, only need to fertilize and clean weeds for the plant to grow. On average, each hectare yields about 15 - 16 tons of tubers, selling price from 15,000 - 16,000 VND/kg. With over 40 hectares of taro, people in Na Lung village estimate to harvest nearly 700 tons of tubers, worth over 11 billion VND. "We have planned the planting area for people to plant to ensure quality, not to plant too much leading to the problem of output consumption. Currently, the commune is moving towards building OCOP for taro products to gradually bring economic efficiency", said Mr. Tan Lao Ta, Chairman of the People's Committee of Coc My commune, Bat Xat district.

From the results, Coc My commune has identified taro as one of the main crops of the locality. To reassure people about expanding the area, the government will support planting and care techniques, and guide replication to other villages, helping people eliminate hunger and reduce poverty in the locality.
