Ha Tinh people proactively prevent shrimp disease after heavy rain

(Baohatinh.vn) - To ensure resistance and prevent diseases, shrimp farmers in Ha Tinh have proactively implemented measures to disinfect the water environment and stabilize indicators in the ponds.

In more than 25 years of shrimp farming, Mr. Nguyen Van Tranh (Tan Quy village, Ho Do commune, Ha Tinh city) has never witnessed a record heavy rain at the end of May like the early morning of May 25.

The rain that lasted for many hours caused the water level in the pond to rise very quickly, about 60-80 cm. The very next day, Mr. Tranh proactively implemented measures to stabilize the farming environment, prevent water source contamination, and ensure growth conditions for the shrimp.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tranh deploys solutions to stabilize water environment after heavy rain

Mr. Tranh shared: “My family currently has 5 ponds with a total area of 7 hectares, raising more than 400,000 shrimp. Currently, the shrimp are at the 30-35 day old stage - an extremely "sensitive" stage to the environment. After heavy rain, to avoid environmental shock to the shrimp due to changes in water pH, I used 60 kg of hot lime to disinfect and sterilize the water source, and at the same time added minerals and calcium to help increase the shrimp's resistance."

Not far away, Mr. Nguyen Van Doan (Tan Quy village, Ho Do commune) is also checking the living conditions of 400,000 30-day-old shrimp, solutions to increase resistance, and stabilize the farming environment.

“Yesterday, I was on duty at the pond 24/24 to proactively and flexibly respond to weather conditions. After the record rain in the early morning of May 25, the water level in the pond rose more than 60cm. Therefore, my family quickly treated the environment, restored microorganisms, and at the same time, increased the fan and aeration time to ensure the shrimp's growth conditions,” said Mr. Doan.

Mr. Doan checks the growth ability of shrimp to regulate the indicators in the pond.

According to the experience of many households in the shrimp farming area of Ho Do commune (Ha Tinh city), prolonged heavy rain often causes the water in the pond to quickly become fresh, disrupting the environment, leading to shrimp being "heat shocked", having poor food consumption, and weak swimming. In case people do not take proactive measures to prevent diseases and stabilize the farming environment in time, shrimp will die and float in large numbers.

Mr. Hoang Hai Duong - Vice Chairman of Ho Do Commune People's Committee shared: "Currently, in Ho Do Commune, the total shrimp farming area is 93.6 hectares, of which there are 5 high-tech farming models, the rest are intensive farming and extensive farming. After the recent heavy rain, the water level in the ponds rose from 50-80 cm, the government has assigned staff to stay close to the area to update the situation, instruct people on measures to protect shrimp and other farmed aquatic products to minimize damage caused by floods".

Most ponds regulate fan running time, aeration, and disinfection with hot lime to ensure shrimp growth conditions.

In Cam Xuyen district, solutions to stabilize the farming environment and increase resistance are also applied by many farmers. Mr. Nguyen Manh Hung (owner of a shrimp farming model in Tien Thang village, Cam Ha commune) shared: “When monitoring the forecast of heavy rain, which could cause flash floods in Cam Xuyen, all workers were mobilized to closely monitor the ponds 24/7.

From 11pm on May 24, we decided to drain the water, in case the water level rose too quickly. Up to now, the water level in the lake is still maintained at a level about 50cm higher than normal, we have promptly implemented mineralization measures with a standard of 3kg of minerals for 1,500 m2 and 25kg of calcium for 1,000 m2 . Currently, 3 ponds with more than 5,000 m2 are still maintaining a stable farming environment.

Shrimp farmers in Cam Ha commune (Cam Xuyen district) proactively implement solutions to limit the outbreak and spread of diseases (if any).

According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Cam Xuyen district, there are currently 104.5 hectares of shrimp farming in the area, concentrated in the communes of Yen Hoa, Cam Duong, Nam Phuc Thang, Cam Loc, Cam Ha...

“Facing the risk of heavy rain causing some dangerous infectious diseases, causing major fluctuations in water environment indicators on farmed shrimp, local authorities have continuously guided and informed localities to promptly deploy propaganda work, popularizing many disease prevention and control solutions to farming households. In particular, closely monitor water environment indicators such as: water temperature, pH, salinity, alkalinity, microalgae, mineral content, dissolved oxygen, etc. In addition, proactively monitor weather developments, deploy timely and effective measures, limit the emergence and spread of diseases (if any)” - Mr. Nguyen Viet Hung - specialist in charge of the aquaculture sector, Department of Agriculture and Environment of Cam Xuyen district shared.

Officers of Ha Tinh Fisheries Department measured water parameters at shrimp ponds in the area.

According to statistics from the Ha Tinh Fisheries Department, at this time, the whole province currently has more than 1,500 hectares of shrimp farming. Experts warn that prolonged heavy rain will cause the indicators in the farming environment to fluctuate, creating conditions for pathogens in the water such as viruses, bacteria, parasites, etc. to thrive. In order to avoid sudden changes in salinity in the pond due to floods, shrimp farmers need to proactively monitor the weather to plan for water regulation.

For acid sulfate soils, farmers can use lime to remove sulfates, increase pH and add minerals. In addition, solutions such as maintaining aeration time, adding vitamins, digestive enzymes, trace minerals, etc. are also recommended to ensure growth conditions for shrimp and limit damage caused by floods.
