In 2024, Huong Khe district will build 15 poverty reduction livelihood models. Of these, 14 models of breeding sows and 1 model of raising goats will be supported by 354 households. Of which, raising goats is a newly implemented model and has brought about clear results.
Mr. Nguyen Van Anh received 3 breeding goats from September 2024 and has now multiplied the herd to 6.
As one of the households supported by the goat farming model in Ha Linh commune, in 2024, Mr. Nguyen Van Anh (born in 1954, village 9) adopted 3 breeding goats. Thanks to the transfer of technical care measures, the herd of goats quickly integrated into the environment and developed stably.
Mr. Nguyen Van Anh shared: “We have the advantage of large hills and gardens, but we have not been able to use them effectively due to lack of investment capital. Although we have made many efforts to develop the economy by planting some fruit trees, the productivity is low because there is no fertilizer, no irrigation water, etc. Therefore, the income is unstable. We are very excited to participate in the goat farming model.
Over time, the goat farming model has become very convenient and suitable for family conditions and local climate. People do not have to invest much, the barn can take advantage of acacia wood in the garden and construction labor. The main food is grass and leaves, so it is very convenient. After 5 months from the date of receiving the goats, the herd has started to reproduce. Realizing that this is a potential model, I decided not to sell but to build more barns to expand the herd. Currently, the family has 6 goats and 2 female goats are preparing to give birth to the next litter."
To participate in the goat farming model, people do not have to make large investments.
Not far away, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan (born in 1991, village 9) faced more difficulties due to lack of human resources, however, her herd of goats is now developing well. According to Ms. Lan, at first, due to not mastering the techniques, the herd of goats developed slowly. Even one sow goat died when giving birth.
After learning from other households and project technical staff, she quickly applied the model to her own household. After nearly 9 months of raising, her family's goat herd has grown and developed steadily.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan (in blue shirt) confidently escaped poverty thanks to the goat farming model.
Ms. Lan excitedly said: "I see that goats will bring high economic efficiency, are easy to take care of, and do not require much investment in buying food like pigs or chickens... We have not sold the first batches but will multiply the herd and expand the scale. With this new way of doing business, the family is confident that they will escape poverty."
Although the model of breeding goats in Ha Linh commune has been implemented for less than a year, it has initially shown its effectiveness. The whole commune has 23 households participating in the model; each household is supported with money to buy breeding goats with a cost of 8 million VND (households escaping poverty), 9 million VND (near-poor households) and 11 million VND (poor households). Currently, the total herd of goats in the commune has reached more than 100 due to households increasing their herds and expanding the scale of raising livestock. This is a model that gradually contributes to helping poor, near-poor and disadvantaged households have the motivation and conditions to develop their economy and escape poverty.
Mr. Bui Ngoc Du - Party Secretary, Chairman of Ha Linh Commune People's Committee said: "Ha Linh is a special area, often flooded, so the economic development of the people faces many difficulties. The new goat farming model has been piloted in recent years in the area and has shown clear effectiveness.
Thereby creating a livelihood model, a new direction for poor and disadvantaged households as well as all farmers in the area. In fact, many households have escaped poverty thanks to goats. In the coming time, we will evaluate the effectiveness and expand the model to help people escape poverty sustainably."
