As a locality with a rapid growth rate and increasing emissions, Ha Tinh City has prioritized environmental protection to achieve green development goals. Since 2020, the locality has participated in the ocean plastic waste management project sponsored by the International Union for Conservation of Nature in Vietnam.

Mr. Nguyen Viet Hien - Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Ha Tinh city shared: “In the past time, we have coordinated to eliminate environmental hotspots at Do market (Dong Mon ward). Up to now, there are no more hotspots of plastic waste in the area. The city has also implemented a series of market models to reduce plastic waste in many forms. At the same time, a number of playgrounds for children have been formed from recycled materials (including playground items assembled from used recycled materials such as tires, wood, etc.). Building a model of an economical house to collect recycled materials. Hundreds of tanks have also been built in the fields to collect and treat pesticide packaging; at the same time, we have coordinated with specialized units to collect and treat according to regulations. At households, waste is classified, many households have been able to treat organic waste on the spot as fertilizer”.

Like Ha Tinh City, other localities in the province have also actively implemented models and movements to protect the environment and prevent plastic waste. In most villages and residential groups, models of "Eco-saving houses" and "Green houses" have been built with the goal of mobilizing the community to classify and collect recyclable materials, including plastic waste.
Ms. Tran Thi Hien - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Xuan My Commune (Nghi Xuan) said: "The environmental protection models deployed in the area have created a great spread in the community. In particular, the "Green House" of women is very effective. This is a house designed with a steel frame, covered with mesh and placed at the village hall for people to leave scrap. Every week, the women's association will collect and sell recycled materials. The money collected will be used for social purposes such as giving gifts to people in difficult circumstances; contributing to the fund to support the construction of livelihood models. In addition, the Youth Union in the area also takes advantage of recycled materials to build a children's playground in the cultural house of the villages...".

According to data from the Department of Agriculture and Environment, Ha Tinh generates 744 tons of waste every day. Of which, there are about 37 tons of plastic waste; mainly plastic bags, disposable plastic cups and spoons, plastic bottles... Of which, about 26 tons are collected for recycling and reuse. However, about 9.2 tons are still collected but not recycled but burned in incinerators; about 1.8 tons have not been collected according to regulations, affecting the environment and human health.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Hung - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment said: “Recently, the environmental sector has advised the Provincial People's Committee to issue a Plan to reduce plastic waste; Regulations on the management of domestic solid waste; directed localities to implement waste classification at source and minimize and limit the use of non-degradable plastic products. In addition to collection, classification and recycling activities at households, residential areas and fields; many localities also organize campaigns to collect plastic bags and plastic waste on the beach; especially in the bathing areas of tourist areas such as Thien Cam, Thach Hai, Thach Bang, Ky Xuan, Xuan Thanh...

Thanks to that, the control of plastic waste at the source in the province has been implemented quite effectively. Environmental protection awareness has been spread. Some large supermarkets have used biodegradable plastic bags to replace non-biodegradable plastic bags; food is wrapped in banana leaves... A number of small traders selling goods at markets and stores have also been aware of limiting the supply of non-biodegradable plastic bags to customers. Many food stores have also changed to using paper cups instead of disposable plastic cups...

June 5th of every year is chosen by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) as World Environment Day. This is an annual international environmental event that has been responded to by Vietnam since 1982 and has become a widespread movement across the country. In 2025, the theme chosen by UNEP is “Beat Plastic Pollution” to call on the global community to take drastic action to address plastic waste - one of the most urgent environmental challenges today.
