Many Chinese consumers have complained on social media about the search feature on the China-specific version of the Galaxy S24 series, saying it doesn't work as well as the international version which runs on Google's AI.

“The overseas version is a completely different world from the mainland version,” said social media user “Sun Weilun.” This user stated that they visited a Samsung store in Hong Kong to experience the models and found that the “circle to search” feature provided by Baidu yielded far fewer results than the version supported by Google.

Previously, Baidu AI Cloud announced a strategic partnership agreement with the South Korean smartphone manufacturer to provide the Ernie large language model (LLM) on the Samsung Galaxy S24 series.

Many of these features, specifically designed for the Chinese market, function similarly to Google's Gemini AI offered on the international versions of the Galaxy S24.

Baidu is considered one of the leading AI companies in China, being the first major technology company in the country to launch an alternative to ChatGPT with the release of Ernie Bot in March 2023.

Last September, the company unveiled its latest LLM version – Ernie 4.0 – claiming it was “in no way inferior to OpenAI’s GPT-4” in overall performance.

However, the partnership between Baidu and Samsung is not expected to significantly boost the South Korean company's position in the Chinese smartphone market, where its market share has fallen from 20% to less than 1% over the past decade.

A major challenge Samsung faces is the rise of Chinese suppliers such as Huawei Technologies, Oppo, and Vivo, who are also releasing their own LLMs or integrating general-purpose AI features into their latest handsets.

“In the Chinese market, AI alone is unlikely to bring about immediate changes,” said Ivan Lam, a senior analyst at Counterpoint Research. However, the Baidu-Samsung partnership demonstrates the South Korean giant’s long-term commitment to mainland China.

According to a recent analysis by Peng Peng, a wireless smartphone strategy analyst at TechInsights, Samsung has priced the S24 and S24+ at a level 500 to 800 yuan (US$70 to US$112) higher than the previous S23 and S23+ models. Meanwhile, Samsung has kept prices the same in the US and lowered them in Europe.

"It seems Samsung isn't aiming to compete on price with domestic smartphone manufacturers in the world's largest smartphone market," Peng said.
