YouTube Premium, the world's largest video platform's paid service, is known for its ability to remove ads while watching content, along with many other additional features.
However, the relatively high price and features that not everyone needs, such as YouTube Music or offline video downloads, prompted YouTube to launch the Premium Lite package.
This stripped-down version is more affordable and cuts down on some features.
Premium Lite is currently available in select markets including the US, Australia, Germany, Thailand, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, and the UK, for $7.99/month. YouTube has also announced plans to expand the service to more countries in the future.
Although YouTube has claimed that Premium Lite will bring a seamless viewing experience and less annoying ads, according to the latest announcement, users of this service package will still face ads when watching videos, starting next month.
Specifically, ads will not appear when Premium Lite users watch videos on topics such as games, fashion , beauty, news, and more.
Conversely, when accessing music content, short videos (YouTube Shorts) or while searching and browsing content on the platform, ads will still appear.
The situation of users who have paid for the Premium Lite package but still have to watch ads has caused a lot of annoyance and questions. Explaining this issue, YouTube said that the Premium Lite package does not include the YouTube Music service.
Therefore, it is "perfectly reasonable" for ads to appear when users listen to music on YouTube. The platform recommends that users upgrade to the full Premium plan if they want a completely ad-free experience, instead of opting for the cheaper Premium Lite plan.
However, even users who have subscribed to the full Premium package have reported that they still occasionally encounter ads while watching YouTube.
These ads are displayed based on factors such as geographic location, video viewing history, or special ad campaigns targeted at Premium users.
YouTube representatives explained that sometimes these ads are intended to introduce promotions that benefit viewers.
However, this explanation still did not satisfy Premium users. They believe that a paid service should not display any advertising content.
