The 2025 Asian Athletics Championships will take place from May 27 to 31 in Gumi, South Korea. Vietnamese athletics has a bronze medal from young talent Tran Thi Nhi Yen (women's 100m) on the competition day of May 28, a silver medal from the women's 4x400m relay team on the evening of May 29.
On the competition day of May 31, the Vietnamese athletics team continued to compete in the finals of two events: women's 400m hurdles with athlete Quach Thi Lan; and women's 5,000m with athlete Nguyen Thi Oanh.
In the women's 400m hurdles, Quach Thi Lan could not create a surprise when she finished 6th with a time of 57.04 seconds.
Gold medalist Mo Jiadie (China) finished with a time of 55.31 seconds, exactly 1% of a second faster than silver medalist Mujidat Adekoya (Bahrain) - with a time of 55.32 seconds.
In the women's 5,000m event, Nguyen Thi Oanh started the race with great determination.
She had previously failed in the women's 1,500m event, and also did not compete in the 3,000m steeplechase event at this year's tournament.
In the first rounds, Vietnam's number 1 female runner was quickly overwhelmed by her naturalized African opponent Tanui from Kazakhstan and strong teams such as Japan, China and India.
However, Nguyen Thi Oanh still competed calmly to aim for the best personal result. And she succeeded even though she only finished 6th overall. With a time of 15 minutes 46.11 seconds, Oanh broke her own national record in the women's 5,000m - the old record was 15 minutes 53.48 seconds.
Currently, the runner born in 1995 holds a total of 5 national records in athletics, including: 5,000m (15 minutes 46.11 seconds), 10,000m (33 minutes 13.23 seconds), 3,000m steeplechase (9 minutes 43.83 seconds), half marathon (21km, 1 hour 13 minutes 22 seconds), and full marathon (42.195km, 2 hours 39 minutes 49 seconds).

At the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships, the Vietnamese athletes participating include many key players such as: Nguyen Thi Oanh (1,500m, 5,000m), Nguyen Trung Cuong (3,000m hurdles), Sam Van Doi, Luong Duc Phuoc (800m, 1,500m), Quach Thi Lan (400m hurdles), Nguyen Thi Ngoc, Nguyen Thi Hang, Hoang Thi Minh Hanh (4x400m women), Huynh Thi My Tien (100m hurdles).
Besides, there are also promising faces expected to soon break through, including: Nguyen Thi Thu Ha (800m, 1,500m), Le Ngoc Phuc, Ta Ngoc Tuong (400m, 4x400m mixed), Tran Thi Nhi Yen (100m, 200m), Bui Thi Kim Anh (high jump), Vu Thi Ngoc Ha, Tran Thi Loan, Nguyen Thi Huong (long jump, triple jump).
Commenting before the tournament started, Mr. Nguyen Duc Nguyen - in charge of athletics at the Vietnam Sports and Physical Training Department - said: "The tournament will help Vietnamese athletics assess our level of expertise compared to Asia.
In addition to professional goals, the tournament is also an opportunity for the coaching staff to gain more information about Southeast Asian opponents, who are also actively preparing for the 33rd SEA Games. Notably, the Philippines seems to have a plan to naturalize athletes to compete for gold medals with Vietnam and Thailand.
