Sculptor Le Trong Nghia: When the eyes are allowed to think...

(GLO)- After three decades of working with shapes, curves and silent dialogues with stone, wood and iron, sculptor Le Trong Nghia released a collection of artistic essays titled Thinking Eyes.

The book is his notes, thoughts and contemplations, like a parallel journey between form and thought.

* Sir, why did you choose the title "Thinking Eyes"?

* Can you briefly introduce the structure of the book? Why did you choose the form of "artistic ramblings" instead of research or monograph?

* For you, what role does writing play in the creative process?

* Many of the essays in the book show that you are interested in “memory” and “traces”. Could you elaborate...

* Images such as prehistoric Venus, Dabous the Giraffe, Pompeii, or Sumerian cuneiform... appear quite often in your works. What do they reflect about the way you view the art world today?

* You once said that “imperfection” is also a kind of beauty. What does “imperfection” mean in your creations?

* In your opinion, is skepticism a necessary element in artistic creation?

* How did the former Binh Dinh (now Gia Lai province) with its treasure trove of sculptures, architecture and Champa heritage influence your visual thinking? In your opinion, in the context of contemporary art, how can we connect heritages such as ancient Go Sanh pottery or Cham sculpture with a new visual language while still preserving the traditional spirit?

* Thanks for the chat!
