Specifically, users just need to type “OFF” and send it to Verizon's service center to block messages sent from email-to-text addresses, an activity that is identified as spam by more than 80%.
Last year, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) issued a warning about the rise in text message scams. The agency said complaints about unwanted text messages increased from 5,700 in 2019 to 14,000 in 2020 and 15,300 in 2021.
The FCC also said in its report that spammers want recipients to “engage” with them. So, like robocalls, automated text messaging systems also seek to tap into users’ fears or frustrations, such as overdue bills, lost packages, bank account errors, or legal issues.
Some scammers aim to steal subscriber money, others simply want to collect users' personal information or confirm that the phone number is "active" to conduct future scams.
By regulation, the FCC prohibits the use of automated dialers to send text messages to cell phone customers except in emergencies or with prior notice.
In early 2023, US authorities also issued the first set of rules on spam messages, requiring mobile service providers to block certain automated messages (robotexts) that are determined to be “highly likely to be illegal”.
Verizon offers a fairly broad text message filter for subscribers who don’t want to turn off email-to-text. The carrier says customers can turn the feature back on by texting “ON” to the operator.
