"President Biden inherited from his predecessor a collapsing economy , rising violent crime rates, and fraying alliances. He turned things around, delivering the strongest economic growth in the world and the lowest violent crime rate in nearly 50 years, while building a stronger NATO than ever before. President Biden will complete his term and deliver more historic achievements for the American people," White House spokesman Andrew Bates said on July 21, responding to a series of messages calling for Biden to resign.
Mr. Bates added that President Biden would continue the work “including continuing to reduce costs, creating jobs for Americans and protecting Social Security. Mr. Biden would also “fight against MAGA economics,” which has caused worse inflation and pushed the United States into recession.”
Earlier, the BBC reported that Republican leaders said Joe Biden's decision to withdraw from the presidential race confirmed their view that he was not qualified to take on the role.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, one of the most influential Republicans in the US Congress , declared: "If Joe Biden is not fit to run for president, he is not fit to be president. He must resign immediately. The November 5 presidential election cannot come soon enough."
President Joe Biden announced he was dropping out of the race for the White House but affirmed that he would continue to lead the country until the end of his term in January 2025. Hours later, the White House also reiterated that President Biden would not resign.
Throughout the afternoon of July 21, leading Republicans repeatedly called for the President to resign, while launching new attacks on Vice President Kamala Harris, who would take over as President if Mr. Biden steps down. Mr. Biden has endorsed Ms. Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee.
