Replicating high economic value livestock farming models

The project “Research and development of a process for raising pigs for meat using natural food supplemented with Thai Nguyen green tea” has been implemented in the locality in recent times and has brought about practical results, helping pigs increase their resistance, grow and develop well, have fragrant meat quality, and bring higher economic value than conventional farming. Many localities in the province are expanding and popularizing this method to households and cooperatives.

Ordered by Thai Nguyen province, Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry has presided over the project, organized research on some natural ingredients, supplemented with 3% green tea leaf powder in the feed ration for pigs. After many batches of pigs raised using this method in Thinh Duc commune, Thai Nguyen city, the results were positive. According to the representative of the research team, using feed supplemented with 3% green tea leaf powder throughout the raising process, the pigs have better resistance, reduce common diseases, tender meat, and have a more fragrant and rich flavor than pigs raised by traditional and industrial methods.

As the household chosen to test the topic, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lieu in Duc Hoa hamlet, Thinh Duc commune said: "After three consecutive batches of 600 pigs, my family fed the pigs with rice bran, corn, soybeans mixed with green tea powder at a ratio of 3% and probiotics to create beneficial bacteria, good for the digestive tract, and protect health. The result is that the pigs raised this way have a high lean meat ratio, fragrant, rich meat, and a selling price 25-30% higher than conventional farming." Carrying out the topic on other experimental models, with some pig breeds, also gave similar results.

With this success, Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry has registered intellectual property rights for two contents: Process of raising and caring for pigs with natural food supplemented with green tea leaf powder (Camellia sinensis) and Thai Nguyen Green Tea Pork Brand; at the same time, coordinating with the Department of Agriculture and Environment, Department of Science and Technology, and localities in the province to promote propaganda, guidance, and technology transfer to replicate the model of raising pigs with food supplemented with Thai Nguyen green tea ingredients in the province.

In fact, in recent times, some households in Thai Nguyen city have raised pigs for meat using natural feed supplemented with green tea powder. Along with adding green tea powder to their feed, many households in Thai Nguyen city use biological bedding with materials from agricultural waste with good absorption capacity, such as rice husks, straw, sawdust, coconut fiber, dry corn stalks, dry sugarcane bagasse, etc. to help reduce odors in barns and greenhouse gas emissions. Waste from pigs and bedding after raising pigs is composted into organic fertilizer, used in farming.

The family of Mr. Tran Van Tuan, in Dong Ao hamlet, Dong Lien commune, raised 100 pigs supplemented with green tea powder and they have been sold. “Using rice bran, corn bran and a mixture of 3% green tea powder as pig feed during the raising process, the whole herd of pigs are healthy and grow well. After about three months of raising, each pig weighs more than 100 kg (as with industrial feed), the pigs have a high lean meat ratio, especially in the back and belly,” Mr. Tuan shared.

To facilitate households raising livestock using this new method, the People's Committee of Thai Nguyen City has directed specialized agencies to provide guidance, support science and technology, and connect supply points for green tea leaf powder products. According to the leader of the Thai Nguyen City Agricultural Service Center, in the city, the trend of using green tea leaf powder to mix with bran to make pig feed tends to increase, because green tea powder is available, easy to buy, has a reasonable price, the process is not complicated, and pork has high value. In the coming time, the Center will continue to promote and support people on livestock farming techniques supplemented with green tea powder, and connect product consumption to expand this new farming method.

Thai Nguyen is the province with the largest tea area in the country, grown in most localities in the province, so the supply of leaves to make green tea powder to supplement pig feed is easy and convenient. According to the production process, after picking all the tea buds, people pick the leaves, clean, dry and grind them into powder, pack them in plastic bags, use them gradually as raw materials to supplement pig feed, or buy them from households and green tea powder production facilities at reasonable prices.
