This is the first state visit by the head of the Japanese Imperial Family since succeeding to the "Chrysanthemum Throne" in 2019.

According to the announcement, accepting the invitation of Indonesian President Joko Widodo during his visit to Tokyo last year, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako will begin a 7-day visit from June 17 to 23.

During the visit, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako are scheduled to meet and have lunch with President Joko Widodo and his wife on June 19 at the palace in Bogor, on the outskirts of Jakarta. Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako will also lay flowers at the Kalibata Heroes Cemetery, which honors those who fought for Indonesia's independence. On June 21, Emperor Naruhito will visit Yogyakarta, an ancient city in Central Java.

In addition, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako will also visit a high-speed railway built with Japan's economic support and a Japanese language university, as well as meet with the Japanese community in Indonesia.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida affirmed that this visit by Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako will help further strengthen the friendship and goodwill with Indonesia, in the context of the 50th anniversary of relations between Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, with Indonesia as the 2023 ASEAN Chair.

Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako have gradually resumed public duties after COVID-19 restrictions were lifted. Last year, the couple made their first overseas trip since ascending the throne to attend the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in London.
