Many large lakes lack water.

VnExpressVnExpress09/05/2023

Ban Ve Lake ( Nghe An ) is short of nearly 400 million m3, many other lakes in the Central and Central Highlands regions have water levels below regulations, with a risk of drought in the next 3 months.

On the morning of May 9, Mr. Chau Tran Vinh, Director of the Department of Water Resources Management ( Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment ), said that the downstream areas of river basins in the North Central region will face the risk of drought and water shortage in May-June at the end of the dry season, the Central and South Central regions in July-August, and the Central Highlands in May. This situation is similar to 2019 - the year El Nino caused a shortage of domestic water and drought throughout the Central region.

Currently, the water level in large lakes is 0.4-24 m lower than the inter-lake operating process, corresponding to a water shortage of 16 to 389 million m3. In addition to Ban Ve, Ngan Truoi Lake (Ha Tinh) is short of more than 222 million m3, Tri An ( Dong Nai ) is nearly 150 million m3, Buon Tua Srah (Dak Lak) is more than 111 million m3, and Song Tranh 2 (Quang Nam) is nearly 70 million m3.

El Nino is forecast to appear in July and August, causing a 20-40% water shortage in rivers in the North Central and South Central regions, 20-50% in rivers in the South Central region, and 15-25% in rivers in the Central Highlands compared to the average of many years. This will make the water shortage situation more serious.

Da Nang and Quang Nam are the first two localities to express concern about the lack of water for daily life and irrigation. In Da Nang City, the water intake for the Cau Do Water Plant, which supplies 80% of clean water for the city of more than 1.1 million people, has had a salinity of approximately 1,000 mg/liter in recent days, making water collection difficult.

In Quang Nam, the dry season has just begun but the lower Thu Bon River has already been affected by saltwater intrusion. The 19/5 pumping station of the Duy Phuoc Agricultural Cooperative, Duy Xuyen District, takes water from the Cau Lau River, about 10 km from Cua Dai Beach, and is contaminated with 14.7 parts per thousand of salt.

Faced with the above situation, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has proposed many urgent solutions, including requiring the Vietnam Electricity Group to prioritize balancing water supplies for downstream areas during the dry season. The agricultural sector and provinces should plan water intake flexibly in terms of time. The construction sector should operate large water plants to ensure safe water supply for downstream areas.
