STO - Soc Trang is the locality with the highest proportion of ethnic minorities in the Mekong Delta. In addition to the support of the local government, ethnic minorities in Soc Trang are also industrious and hard-working in production and business, gradually escaping poverty and becoming quite rich.
Comrade Pham Le Lam - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Soc Trang province said that the whole province currently has over 138,000 households achieving the title of excellent farmers at all levels, of which over 31,400 are Khmer and 8,000 are Chinese. In particular, the number of excellent farmers with an income of over 450 million VND/year increased 2.5 times and the income of over 1 billion VND/year increased 4.5 times (compared to 2018).
From the movement of Farmers competing in good production and business, uniting to help each other get rich and sustainably reduce poverty, more and more effective economic models of ethnic minorities have emerged, most of which are Khmer people, contributing to creating jobs for thousands of rural workers, helping 1,560 farming households escape poverty, reducing the poverty rate among Khmer people to 4.55% (compared to the total number of Khmer households in the province), comrade Pham Le Lam added.
Mr. Thach Chanh Do Ra (Khmer ethnic group in Chau Thanh district) is one of the typical examples of production and business, with a comprehensive farming model (growing rice, growing coconuts, raising cows, fish, elephant snakes, etc.). Mr. Do Ra said that his family currently produces 2.5 hectares, of which 2 hectares are used for growing specialty rice combined with raising fish and 0.5 hectares for growing coconuts and raising cows, raising elephant snakes. After deducting expenses, the family earns an annual profit of over 400 million VND. Mr. Thach Chanh Do Ra shared that in order to produce agriculture effectively and increase family income, choosing crops and livestock suitable for the local land and climate is important. Mr. Huynh Viet Truong said that thanks to the guidance of the functional sector in animal husbandry, combined with the loan support from the farmers' association, it has created conditions for his family to develop the model. Currently, after deducting expenses, his family's income from growing rice and chives is over 600 million VND/year.
According to the leader of the Ethnic Minorities Committee of Soc Trang province, the province has ethnic minorities accounting for 35.44% of the population, of which the Khmer ethnic group accounts for 30.19%, the Chinese ethnic group accounts for 5.22%, and the remaining 25 ethnic groups account for 0.036%. For the Khmer ethnic group, they live throughout the districts, towns, and cities in the province, interspersed with the Kinh and Chinese ethnic groups, concentrated in Vinh Chau town, Soc Trang city, My Xuyen, Tran De, Chau Thanh, Long Phu, My Tu, and Thanh Tri districts. The whole province has 63 communes in the ethnic minority area, with 17 communes being particularly difficult according to Decision No. 861/QD-TTg, dated June 4, 2021 of the Prime Minister. Currently, the infrastructure of the area with a large number of ethnic minorities is being focused on investment and construction, increasingly meeting the needs of the people in production, business, and trading of goods.
In the coming time, Soc Trang will focus on integrating the province's resources with the programs and projects of the Central Government and the Government to invest in areas with large ethnic minorities and areas with special difficulties, especially drastically implementing the National Target Program on socio-economic development in ethnic minority areas for the period 2021 - 2030.
At the same time, promote the implementation of the movement "Farmers compete in good production and business, unite to help each other get rich and reduce poverty sustainably" among ethnic minorities. Local authorities will also increase the transfer of new scientific and technological advances into production and business to help ethnic minorities both enrich their households and help many surrounding households join hands to build their homeland Soc Trang more and more prosperous.
