Previously, in Dong Hoa commune (Tuyen Hoa district), a student died from being bitten by a rabid dog, the victim was NGH (3 years old, Thuan Hoa village, Dong Hoa commune).
According to the family, H. was bitten by the family dog about a month ago; the dog died four days after biting the person. However, the family did not take H. for a rabies vaccination.
On May 20, H. showed signs of fever and was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with enteritis. Afterwards, H. had a seizure, scratched and bit the caregiver and talked nonsense. He was transferred to the Vietnam - Cuba Friendship Hospital in Dong Hoi for emergency treatment.
On May 21, H. died. Doctors at the hospital diagnosed H.'s death as rabies.
Through the investigation of CDC Quang Binh, there were 3 other cases that were also bitten by dogs on the same day as baby H. They were: NHT (6 years old), NTA (3 years old, siblings) and THL (6 years old, neighbor of baby H. who came to visit).
However, after being bitten by a dog, these cases did not receive treatment for their wounds and were not taken by their families to get rabies vaccinations. As for H.'s family, while taking care of the child, the child's parents were also bitten on the hand.
In addition, on May 21, in Thuan Hoa commune, there were 6 cases of students being bitten by 3 dogs. All 6 cases were taken to get vaccinated by their families immediately after.
Currently, CDC Quang Binh has requested Tuyen Hoa District Medical Center to continue investigating dog bite cases in Dong Hoa commune; mobilize, advise and propagate to people how to prevent and treat dog bites.
