Many people are tricked into accepting 'fake' gratitude gifts

VnExpressVnExpress08/06/2023

The trick of giving gifts of gratitude is not new, but recently there have been many forms of impersonating supermarket systems, brands and e-commerce platforms.

A few days ago, while working, Binh (31 years old, office worker in Hanoi ) received a call from someone claiming to be an employee of Lazada. "Congratulations on receiving a gift from Lazada's exciting summer promotion," this person said loudly over the phone, trying to drown out the surrounding noise.

The listed gift package includes a Hitachi refrigerator, a shopping voucher worth nearly 2 million VND, and a blender.

"These are all free gifts, you will not have to pay any additional costs. A staff member will contact you later to guide you on how to receive the gift. You use this Zalo number, right? We will send a friend request here," this person said.

However, when contacting the hotline of the above e-commerce platform, Ms. Binh was told that there was no such program. Guessing that this was a scam call, she did not agree to add friends from strange Zalo numbers to avoid losing more personal information.

Ms. Hang, in Go Vap district, felt secure in making friends with the impersonator when he promised to give her free household appliances, including shipping costs. This person claimed to be an employee of the Eco Mart supermarket chain, saying that she was a loyal customer of Samsung and Sony, so she was lucky to receive a free set of household appliances on the occasion of the company's 30th anniversary.

"They said they would send pictures of 32 free household items via Zalo. After choosing, I would have to text back the name of the item for them to take note of. If the delivery person asks for any kind of fee, I have the right to refuse to accept it," Ms. Hang said, adding that the above statement made her agree to add them as friends.

After selecting a household item, she was asked to provide her full name, phone number, age and home address to receive the gift. She thought that was it, but the other party continued to send her an electronic registration form with her personal information filled in, titled: "Order form".

In addition, they also asked her to join a group via the link sent.

"After I was added to the group, someone texted me via Telegram, saying that to receive the above gift, I needed to complete many tasks. Among them, watching short advertisements about the products of the brands would earn me a bonus of 10,000-50,000 VND," Ms. Hang added.

According to Ms. Hang, to receive the money, they required her to provide information about her bank account number and the name of the beneficiary. When she finished, she received the full amount of money quickly. Not stopping there, they continued to offer investment packages from 500,000 to several tens of millions of VND and asked her to deposit money into their account when choosing the corresponding packages.

"Only then did I realize this was a scam. If I paid them, I would risk losing everything, so I stopped," said Ms. Hang.

Ms. Hang added that she has not received any free gifts despite providing full information. In the past 10 days, Ms. Hang has continued to receive 3 other free gift calls from many subjects impersonating different supermarket systems or e-commerce platforms.

According to the survey , many other women were also scammed with the above tricks. Currently, many people are also scammed out of tens of millions of dong just because they are greedy for gifts or commissions.

Sharing with VnExpress , representatives of Lazada and Eco Mart said that the company does not give gifts of gratitude in the above forms. These companies have recently received many calls from customers, so they have also continuously warned.

According to Lazada, there have been many cases of impersonating them to send congratulatory messages to customers who have won gifts. If customers agree to receive the gift, they will be asked to pay additional shipping or support fees. In addition, many cases of sending SMS messages to customers, which contain links or requests to provide personal information such as bank cards, OTP codes. If customers follow the request, there is a risk of having their personal information and bank accounts stolen.

To avoid scams, companies advise against paying any fees if you do not purchase from official sales systems. In addition, do not click on links from messages of unknown origin to avoid having your information stolen, losing money, or being led into illegal business groups.
