Da Nang City Police have just sent a document to universities and colleges in the area, warning about a number of individuals impersonating universities to scam students and parents through overseas study scholarship programs.
According to the announcement, from the end of 2024 until now, the situation of impersonating universities to defraud international students in enrollment has been complicated in many localities across the country, including Da Nang city.

Local universities have increased their propaganda to students and parents (Illustration: Hoai Son).
The main tricks are forging announcements and invitations to participate in scholarship programs with logos, seals, and signatures of university principals and functional agencies under the Ministry of Education and Training.
In addition, the subjects also used social networks or fake emails (impersonating the International Cooperation Department of schools) to spread advertisements, inviting students to participate in short-term study abroad programs.
Impersonating an officer of the school's International Cooperation Department, they call prospective students to discuss scholarship programs. Taking advantage of students' desire to study abroad, the scammers pressure parents and students to send money immediately because there is a waiting list, otherwise they will lose their place.
According to the police, many students and parents lacking information about study abroad programs have been scammed of large sums of money, affecting the reputation of many schools.
Typically, at the University of Technical Education (University of Danang), a student received information impersonating the school, announcing that he had "passed" an exchange program with Hosei University (Japan).
The announcement stated that students would be exempted from tuition and housing fees, but had to prove their financial capacity through a bank account with a balance of VND200 million. The student’s family transferred money into the account to prove their financial capacity.
However, suspecting that the content had signs of abnormality, the student reported to the Student Affairs Office and was confirmed that the notice was fake.
A similar situation also occurred at the University of Economics and the University of Technology (University of Danang), when some students received notices of full scholarships from programs of unknown origin.
Da Nang City Police requested that local universities increase propaganda and disseminate warnings to students and parents.
