What medications should not be taken with apple cider vinegar?

Báo Gia đình và Xã hộiBáo Gia đình và Xã hội11/01/2025

Many people use apple cider vinegar for health care. However, using apple cider vinegar with some medications at the same time can reduce the effectiveness of the medication, even causing dangerous side effects…

Apple cider vinegar is a fermented juice from fresh apples, containing some vitamins, minerals, fiber, acetic acid and citric acid... which helps improve skin health, blood sugar levels and effectively control weight. However, for those who are taking medication, they need to be aware of adverse interactions when drinking with apple cider vinegar.

Here are some medications that should not be taken with apple cider vinegar:

1. Apple cider vinegar may interact with diabetes medications

Apple cider vinegar may lower blood sugar levels in people with diabetes. Therefore, it may increase the risk of hypoglycemia when used with diabetes medications such as: Glucophage, metformin, glucotrol (glipizide), insulin, ozempic/wegovy (semaglutide).

Signs of hypoglycemia include: Feeling weak, rapid heart rate, sweating, hunger, confusion, fainting and seizures...

Apple cider vinegar may interact with certain medications and affect their effectiveness.

2. Digoxin heart medication

Digoxin is a prescription drug used to treat heart conditions such as atrial fibrillation and heart failure. Taking digoxin and apple cider vinegar increases the risk of overdose and poisoning. Symptoms of digoxin poisoning include: confusion, decreased consciousness, difficulty breathing, rapid heart rate, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and vision changes.

3. Diuretics

Diuretics used to treat heart and blood vessel diseases that help the body get rid of excess fluid include hydrochlorothiazide, chlorothiazide, and Lasix (furosemide). Apple cider vinegar lowers blood potassium, and some diuretics also lower potassium levels. Therefore, taking apple cider vinegar with potassium-depleting diuretics increases the risk of hypokalemia.

Symptoms of hypokalemia include: confusion, fatigue, muscle cramps, fast/irregular heartbeat, muscle weakness or paralysis. Treatment of hypokalemia depends on the severity of symptoms and complications.

4. Stimulant laxatives

Stimulant laxatives help promote bowel movements and are often used to treat constipation and other gastrointestinal health problems. Laxatives include senna and dulcolax (bisacodyl)...

Taking certain laxatives with apple cider vinegar may increase the risk of potassium deficiency.

5. Herbs containing cardiac glycosides

Cardiac glycosides are used to treat heart conditions such as atrial fibrillation or heart failure. There are many herbs that contain cardiac glycosides, including foxglove, oleander, and lily of the valley. Taking apple cider vinegar with herbs that contain cardiac glycosides can lead to dangerous side effects.

6. Licorice root

Licorice root extract supplements are used to help with conditions such as digestive problems, menopausal symptoms, and infections. When used for long periods of time or in high doses, this supplement can increase blood pressure and decrease potassium levels. Taking licorice and apple cider vinegar together can increase the risk of hypokalemia.

7. Horsetail

Horsetail is an herb from the Equisetum plant that has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is used to help remove fluid from the body, treat urinary tract infections, and improve skin, hair, and bone health.

One potential side effect of this herb is low potassium. Taking horsetail and apple cider vinegar together may increase the risk of low potassium.

Note, for those who are taking medication, they should consult their doctor before using apple cider vinegar. If you experience signs or symptoms of low blood sugar or low potassium when using apple cider vinegar, you should notify your doctor immediately for timely treatment.
