Hollywood stars injured while giving their all for their roles

Those on-set accidents were the result of many different factors: human error, unsafe working conditions, directors insisting on doing whatever it took to make the film look "real"...

Of course, over the years, Hollywood has taken more stringent measures to keep its cast and crew safe, but audiences still see incidents pop up from time to time.

In most cases, most injuries are treatable, although production is sometimes delayed to allow actors to rest and recover.

However, sometimes, the injuries cannot be cured; even leaving long-term damage on the actor's body, affecting the rest of their life and career.

Hugh Jackman is famous for his role as Wolverine in the X-Men series partly because of his face and physique.

In an interview, Jackman admitted that he "damaged my voice playing Wolverine". He overexerted himself and damaged his vocal cords.

Fortunately, this injury did not stop Jackman from acting. He returned as Wolverine in Deadpool 3 , which promises to be a new adventure across the multiverse.

Russell Crowe

Russel Crowe is famous for the movie Gladiator

The actor has had a number of roles throughout his career. Crowe spoke about his long-term injuries in an interview with Vulture , including multiple shoulder surgeries, a torn Achilles tendon, and a toe that lacks cartilage entirely. He attributed his injuries largely to the intense work involved in filming.

In Mystery, Alaska, Russell Crowe had to skate 12 to 14 hours a day. Cinderella Man saw Crowe training to become a real heavyweight boxer, and Robin Hood had a lot of physical activity.

Many of Crowe's injuries stem from arguably his most famous role: Maximus in the Ridley Scott-directed blockbuster Gladiator .

Jackie Chan

Jackie Chan suffered a traumatic brain injury.

Martial arts icon Jackie Chan has always performed his own stunts. The actor has suffered countless injuries throughout his decades-long career: broken noses, broken teeth, broken bones...

In his autobiography I Am Jackie Chan: My Life in Action , he devotes an entire chapter to detailing all of these injuries, while also specifically recounting the worst he encountered on the set of the 1986 action comedy Armour of God .

In the film, Chan plays an adventurer who has to jump from a castle wall onto a nearby tree branch. According to the actor, it was nothing special and even went smoothly on the first try. However, he was not satisfied with the scene and requested another take. This time, the branch broke and Chan fell headfirst onto the stone floor below, causing a piece of his skull to break off and penetrate his brain, causing internal bleeding.

Jackie Chan underwent emergency surgery that lasted eight hours. Fortunately, the surgery was successful. However, a plastic plate was inserted into his brain to cover the hole in his skull and that plastic plate remains in place to this day.

The actor also lost hearing in one ear while filming the final part of Armour of God. For him, that scene was the closest he ever came to "facing death".

Taylor Hickson

Taylor Hickson still has scars on his face

One of her most compelling roles came in the Canadian-French co-production Ghostland . Hickson plays Vera, one of two daughters who reunite at their mother's old home.

Sadly, the role was marred by a tragic accident on set that led to a lawsuit. The lawsuit alleges that Hickson, while filming a scene involving a glass door, was asked to bang on the glass for dramatic effect but was not given any safety protection.

When asked if it was safe to do so, director Pascal Laugier and his producers told her it was. However, the glass shattered and Hickson was cut on the left side of her face by shards of glass, requiring 70 stitches.

The lawsuit resulted in the film's production company, Incident Productions, being fined $40,000 for failing to comply with the workplace safety and health act.

After undergoing laser and silicone treatments, Hickson was left with permanent facial scarring from the accident, which can still be seen on the actress's chin and left cheek to this day.

Frank Sinatra

Star Frank Sinatra

The Oscar-winning actor also nearly lost a finger. Frank Sinatra was injured while filming John Frankenheimer's The Manchurian Candidate , adapted from Richard Condon's 1959 novel. He played Ben Marco, a captain who returns from the Korean War to find that the soldiers on the other side have "brainwashed" him and his comrades.

Sinatra continued filming the scene despite his injury and never sought medical attention. In a special interview celebrating his 26th anniversary in the business, Sinatra showed off his restricted finger movement.

Although Sinatra went on to have a successful career in Hollywood, the injury troubled him for the rest of his life.
