At that time, she had a tense relationship with Mariah Carey and was accused of threatening to shoot "that motherfucker" Mariah Carey if she had a gun in her hand, before leaving the American Idol studio on October 2, 2012. Sources said that at that time, Mariah Carey hired additional security personnel after the incident of Minaj threatening her life, but the female rapper denied everything. The reason was that Minaj could not stand Mariah Carey's sarcasm when sitting at the judges' table. Mariah Carey officially announced that she would leave the judge's position in season 13 despite a salary of up to 18 million USD when sitting in the "hot seat" of American Idol . Nicki Minaj also confirmed that she would not continue to participate in this program next season.

During a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen , Nicki Minaj revealed that she would only return to American Idol on one condition.

When Andy Cohen asked her, "How much money would it take to be a judge on American Idol again?" After some consideration, she replied, "Probably $30 million."

American Idol organizers have not confirmed whether Nicki Minaj will be invited. Currently, the judges for season 22 have been announced to include Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. American Idol season 22 begins on February 18, 2024.
