Immediately after reorganizing and streamlining its structure, the Thai Nguyen Forest Protection Department quickly stabilized its operations, developed its annual work program, maintained regular weekly and monthly meetings; and decisively directed the work of forest management, protection and development, and forest fire prevention and control.
Coordination between the Forest Protection Force, local authorities, and forest owners has become increasingly close. The application of information technology and satellite imagery interpretation has effectively supported the early detection of suspected forest changes, thereby enabling timely prevention and handling of violations.
Mr. Hua Van Tien, Deputy Head of Forest Ranger Station No. 12, said: After the administrative unit merger, the management area is larger, but the coordination mechanism is clearly defined. Thanks to the application of satellite imagery, many suspicious points are detected early and handled promptly, limiting the occurrence of violations.
The results of the 2025 task implementation show that many targets have been met and exceeded the set plan: Concentrated forest planting reached over 122%, scattered tree planting reached nearly 145%, and the area of forest certified for sustainable forest management exceeded 175% compared to the plan for the period.
Despite positive developments, forest protection efforts still face numerous challenges. The forest ranger force is understaffed; in some areas, one ranger is responsible for over 3,000 hectares of forest, while the terrain is rugged and the area borders multiple provinces.
In the early stages of implementing the two-tiered local government model, some localities were still confused in their organization and implementation; new officials had not yet fully grasped their responsibilities, leading to inconsistent implementation of state management responsibilities in forestry in some areas, resulting in continued instances of deforestation and illegal logging.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tuyen, Director of the Management Board of Special-Use and Protection Forests in Thai Nguyen province, said: "The expanded management area, coupled with the lack of additional staff, has increased pressure. However, the Board has proactively coordinated with local authorities and collaborated with the local forest rangers, thereby gradually establishing a system and initially demonstrating the effectiveness of the new model."
Climate change continues to keep the risk of forest fires high. In 2025, the number of forest fires increased compared to the same period, and storms and floods also caused significant damage to forestry production. Notably, although the total number of violations of forestry laws tended to decrease, illegal deforestation cases increased.
Mr. Tran Minh Ha, Deputy Head of the Thai Nguyen Forest Protection Department, affirmed: After the merger and implementation of the two-tiered local government model, the Forest Protection Department clearly recognizes that this is both a favorable condition for streamlining the apparatus and places higher demands on management. In the coming time, the Department will continue to tighten discipline and order, improve the capacity of its staff, strengthen coordination with local authorities, and put the people and forest owners at the center of sustainable forest protection and development.
Protecting forests in the new context requires greater determination and the coordinated efforts of the entire political system and the people. More than six months after the merger, the Thai Nguyen Forest Protection Force is gradually overcoming difficulties and capitalizing on advantages, ensuring that each forest is firmly protected and becomes a sustainable livelihood for today and tomorrow.
