TASS news agency quoted the Kremlin's announcement as saying that during the three-hour talks, the two leaders welcomed the progress in bilateral relations and mentioned the prospect of comprehensively resolving the problems of Syria and the surrounding region.
Speaking at the talks, President Putin affirmed that the joint efforts of Moscow and Damascus have brought about clear results in the fight against terrorism in Syria.
Regarding bilateral trade relations, according to the Kremlin leader, trade between the two countries increased by 7% in 2022. Russia also joined the international community in contributing to the reconstruction process in Syria after the devastating earthquake last month.
President Assad thanked Russia for its earthquake relief efforts and for Moscow's support for Damascus on the international stage.
Regarding regional issues, the two Russian and Syrian leaders appreciated the restoration of diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia, considering this an important step contributing to strengthening stability in the Middle East region.
Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, TASS reported that speaking to Mr. Putin, President Assad reiterated "Syria's support for Russia's special military campaign" and said that it is necessary to stabilize the current world situation.
Meanwhile, in an interview with Sputnik after a meeting at the Kremlin, the Syrian President said: "World War III is taking place, but it is different in form than before."
According to the leader, the armies of several countries are also fighting against each other like in the past, but in the present, the participation of "modern weapons, especially nuclear weapons, makes it different from conventional war".
That is why wars are now turning into "proxy wars," Mr. Assad said.
President Assad is visiting Russia since March 14. The Syrian leader affirmed that the visit marks a new stage in relations between the two countries. The last meeting between the two presidents took place in September 2021, also in Moscow.
