"Hot" race for admission to public 10th grade in Quang Nam

Unlike many years ago, the race to enter grade 10 in the 2025-2026 school year in Quang Nam will be "hotter", because students have to go through an entrance exam instead of being selected as before, to compete for a place in a public high school.

A place of tension, a place of ease

One of the most notable opening points of the 10th grade admission plan by entrance exam this year is that students are not forced to register for admission to a specific high school and are allowed to register for 2 wishes at 2 different schools.

And through the results of enrollment registration, it shows that previous concerns about students flocking to a certain school have not happened. Schools with tradition and a brand of quality will of course create a significant attraction for students, but not many.

Except for Tran Cao Van High School (Tam Ky), which has a much higher number of students registering for NV1 than the target (172 more), the remaining schools have a small difference in numbers.

For example, Tran Quy Cap, Nguyen Trai and Tran Hung Dao High Schools in Hoi An City have 70 more NV1 registrations than the target. The opposite situation even occurs in Duy Xuyen District, where the number of students registering for NV1 at Sao Nam High School is lower than that of Le Hong Phong and Ho Nghinh High Schools.

Similarly, Nui Thanh High School, Huynh Ngoc Hue (Dai Loc) only has a few more students or Tieu La (Thang Binh) just meets the quota; even Nguyen Duy Hieu High School (Dien Ban) has less NV1 students than the quota (23 students short).

Meanwhile, at some schools, competition for a place in grade 10 is quite intense when the number of NV1 registrations is quite large, such as Luong The Vinh High School (Dien Ban), Do Dang Tuyen, Chu Van An (Dai Loc), Nguyen Thai Binh (Thang Binh).

However, this is not a sudden change but something that was predicted in advance; the reason is the large number of 9th grade students in the area.

Located in the eastern part of Dien Ban, Luong The Vinh High School has not been able to meet the learning needs of the past few years due to the large number of secondary school students (so in previous years the Department of Education and Training and the locality decided to transfer students to grade 10 to Hoi An).

This year is no exception when the number of NV1 registrations is 209 more than the quota even though the enrollment scale of this school is the largest in the province, up to 14 classes with 616 quotas.

Similarly, Nguyen Thai Binh High School in recent years has not been able to meet the learning needs of students in the eastern part of Thang Binh district, so competition in enrolling students into the school is very high, because studying at Thai Phien or Tieu La High School is too far away.

Similarly, students from Dai Loc B area all choose to attend Do Dang Tuyen High School, and the 5 communes in Dai Loc A area have no choice but to register to study at Chu Van An, leading to competition at these two schools always being higher than at the two schools located in Ai Nghia town, Huynh Ngoc Hue and Luong Thuc Ky.

The same goes for Nong Son High School (Que Son), where the number of NV1s exceeds the target of 72 while Tran Dai Nghia High School lacks the target and Que Son High School only has 3 more.

Worry

In fact, in previous years, the competition for admission to public grade 10 was still fierce, especially in high schools with a large number of students registering for admission compared to the quota (such as Phan Boi Chau, Tran Cao Van - Tam Ky, Tran Quy Cap - Hoi An...), and even more tense, because the enrollment quota for the whole province was only 80%, about 5% lower than this year.

However, due to the implementation of the admission method based on academic results and conduct in 4 years of secondary school, there is not as much competition as this year.

In other words, in the past there was indirect competition through academic results, but now there is direct competition through entrance exams, so the pressure on students and parents is obvious.

Every year at this time, 9th graders have summer vacation (except for those who register for the 10th grade specialized entrance exam), but this year everyone must focus on reviewing their lessons to prepare well for the 10th grade entrance exam to achieve the highest results.

According to parent Phan Minh Tung (Tam Ky City), having an additional exam will make students more tired and worried, which is natural because "studying is talent, taking the exam is fate", if unfortunately they do not do well on the test, they will lose the opportunity to enter public grade 10. However, many people support the organization of the entrance exam because it will help to evaluate the true quality.

"The student with better academic performance and higher test scores will be admitted, avoiding the situation of evaluation based on school scores which is often unfair and not objective" - Mr. Tung shared.

Mr. Thai Viet Tuong - Director of the Department of Education and Training acknowledged that the admission process in recent years has revealed many limitations such as the assessment and classification of students is not true, does not ensure objectivity and fairness, making students lack motivation to study.

It is not excluded that there are schools and teachers who evaluate students more lightly to help students increase their competitiveness in grade 10. Therefore, although entrance exams create pressure in terms of exams (organizing exams, funding, students reviewing...), they can overcome the limitations; at the same time, create motivation for students to study as well as comprehensively evaluate the learning process of students, thereby contributing to improving the qualityof education .
